B. Developmental Activities/ Motivation and
Unlocking Difficulties
I prepare a simple game for all of you. It will
lead us on what is our topic for today

This game is called “Pass the answer”. Here is the

mechanics.
Form 4 groups with 6 members each. Choose from the
members 1 person who will read the question and 1
member who will shout the answer. And the remaining
are those who will pass the message. But each person
has a challenge to do before he/ she can pass the
message.

The 1st person will read the question and pass it to the
2nd person. The second person, after getting the answer
or the question he/she will turn 6 times before she can
pass it to the 3rd one. And the third one after hearing the
answer or the question he/she will do 6 jumping jacks
before passing the message to the 4th person. The 4th
person will rotate his/her hips 6 times then he will pass
the answer on the 5th one. The 5th one will reach for
his/her toes 6 times before passing the answer to the last
person and the last person will eat 4 polvoron and
he/she will shout the answer.

There is allotted time of 2 minutes for the game but the

1st group who will get the fastest time with the correct
answer will win and all the members of that group will Yes Ma’am.
get plus 5 on our quiz later.
Okay Ma’am.
Did you understand?

Don’t worry my question was easy so don’t be afraid.

Okay?

(distribute the question) Yes Ma’am.

Here is your question. Do not open it until I said go

So are you ready?

Okay your 2 minutes start now.

(the game will start)

(wait until it finish)

Okay the answer is POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION!

We have a winner. Congratulation group _____. All

Yes ma’am.
Did you enjoy our game?

Okay all of you please arrange the chair and please sit (student will go to their seat and
down for able us to start our discussion. arrange all the chair)

Let us proceed now to our discussion.

Lesson Proper

Our lesson for today is all about a polynomial

Functions. First let us know what is a Polynomial
Function?

A polynomial Function is a function of the form

P ( x ) =an x n+ an−1 x n−1 +a n−2 x n−2+ …+a1 x+ a0
an ≠ 0

Where in
n is a nonnegative integer
a 0 , a 1, … , an are real numbers called coefficient
n
a n x is the leading term
a n is the leading coefficient
a 0 Is the constant term.

A polynomial that is written in decreasing powers or

their exponents are decreasing it is said to be in
standard form.

A polynomial function can be written also as f ( x) or y

For more understanding let us answer this.

5. y=x 4 + 3 x 3−5 x42−31x +4 4
2
y= ( x + 4 ) ( x+1 )( x−1 )

Okay very good class!

Do you have any question regarding the form of a
Polynomial Function?

Now that you are familiar with the form of Polynomial None ma’am.
Function let us now discuss a topic that has something
to do with the x- intercept of a graph of the Polynomial
Function.

These are the x- values when y=0 where in the graph

intersects the x- axis can be determine.

For you to learn further let us have an example. To

recall the relationship between factors and x intercept
consider these example.

1. Find the intercepts of y=x 3−4 x 2 + x+ 6.

The first thing to do is to factor out the given

polynomial. So as a review what method can we use to
factor it? Anyone?

Yes _____?
Synthetic division ma’am.
Okay Very good! That is one method. Let us try.

First get the leading coefficient and the constant. Let us

do the P over Q to get all the possible roots or factor of
the equation.

Okay what is the P or the constant? Yes _____?

6.
Good, how about the leading coefficient? Yes ____?

Okay very good! 1

Let us now think of the factor

p 6
=
q 1

What are the factors of 6? Yes ____?

± 6 , ±3 , ± 2, ± 1
Nice! How about factor of 1?
±1
p 6 ± 6 , ±3 ,± 2 ,± 1
= =
q 1 ±1

Possible roots are± 6 , ± 3 ,± 2 ,± 1

Let’s try the +1

+1 1 -4 1 6
1 -3 -2

1 -3 -2 4 not a root!

-1 1 -4 1 6
-1 5 -6

1 -5 6 0 root of the equation

Now we have the equation x 2−5 x+ 6.

We are now having a quadratic equation. In this, to get
the other roots we can use now the Quadratic Formula. −b ± √b 2−4 ac
Again what is the quadratic formula? Yes _____? ¿
2a

Wow very good!

Let us substitute. 1
What is the value of a?

-5
B?
6
C?

Okay let us substitute with our formula.

−(−5 ) ± √52 −4 ( 1 ) ( 6 )
x=
2( 1)
5 ± √ 25−24
x=
2
5 ±√1
x=
2
5+1 6
x 1= = =3
2 2
5−1 4
x 2= = =2
2 2

Roots are -1, 2 and 3

Factors are ( x +1 )( x−2 ) ( x −3)

Now that we are in factored form we can get now the

x-intercepts by using y=0

f ( x )=( x +1 ) ( x−2 )( x−3 )

Let us change f ( x ) into y

y= ( x +1 ) ( x−2 )( x−3 )

It said that y=0 so that we can equate y to 0

0=( x+1 )( x−2 ) ( x−3 )

Let us distribute and equate each factor to 0. To

determine the value of x transpose.

( x +1 )=0 ; ( x−2 )=0 ; ( x −3 )=0

And it gives us.

x=−1 ; x=2 ; x=3

Therefore the x-intercepts are -1, 2, and 3.

This means the graph will pass through (-1, 0), (2, 0)
and (3, 0).

Now that we all know the x- intercept let us now find

the y- intercept of the graph.

Finding the y- intercept is more straightforward.

Simply, we need to set x = 0 in the given polynomial.

Okay let us try.

3 2
y=x −4 x + x+ 6

Substitute 0 on all the x of the equation

y=03−4(0)2 +0+ 6
y=0−0+ 0+6
y=6
(the student plot the point)
The y- intercept is 6. This means the graph will also
pass through
(0, 6)

Let us plot all the coordinates on our board.

Please plot the first one. (1, 0) Yes ______.

(the student plot the point)

Next (2, 0). ______.

\
The third one (3, 0).
Yes _____. (the student plot the point)

Okay the last one (0, 6). Yes _____.

(the student plot the point)

Okay let us connect together to see the graph of the

polynomial function.

(the teacher connect all the point)

So this is the graph of the equation

y=x 3−4 x 2 + x+ 6

Did you understand?

Yes ma’am.

For more understanding,

Let us try another example.

y=x ( x+ 6 ) ( x +1 ) ( x−1)

Who wants to answer? Yes ______. (the student will answer on the board)
y=x ( x+ 6 ) ( x +1 ) ( x−1)
x=0 ; x=−6 ; x =−1; x=1

The x- intercepts are (-6, 0), (-1,0), (0,

0),and (1,0)

For y-intercept. Solve for the

equation.
Using FOIL method.

Answer: y=x 4 + 6 x3 −x2 −6 x

y=04 +6 (0)3−(0)−6( 0)
y=0
Y- Intercept is 0. And the coordinate
is (0,0)

Very good. On our second example it is in factored

form. So we don’t need to factor out. But in getting the
y- intercept the polynomial equation should be in
standard form.

Generalization
Did you understand?
Yes Ma’am.
Do you have any question?
None ma’am.
If you don’t have any question, I have questions to all of
you.

In getting the x intercept what should we do to the

equation?

Anyone who can answer? Yes _____?

Ma’am we need to factor the equation
first then if it is in the factored form
already equate each factor to zero then
determine the value of x by transpose it.

Very Good! Very well said.

How about in getting the Y- intercept of the equation, what

should we do? Yes______? Ma’am in getting the y- intercept simply
substitutes 0 to all the x of the equation.

Nice answer!

I thought you already master the method of getting the

intercept of a Polynomial Function. So we can have now Yes ma’am.
our activity?

Okay, good!
