IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or Activity: Revisiting Roots of Equations
presenting the new
lesson Note to the Teacher:
 Divide the class into six groups.
 Let each group answer the given activity below:

Activity : Determine the real root(s) of each

equation.
1. x – 2 = 0 Expected answer: x=2
2. x + 3 = 0 x=-3
3. x(x – 4) = 0 x=0 or x=4
4. (x + 1)(x – 3) = 0 x=-1 or x=3
5. x2 + x – 2 = 0 x=-2 or x=1
6. x2(x – 9)(2x+1) = 0 x=0(two roots) or
x=9 or x=-1/2
7. (x + 4)(x2- x + 3) = 0 x=-4, other roots
are
not real
2
8. 2x(x - 36) = 0 x=0 or x=6 or x=-6
9. (x+8)(x-7)(x2-2x+5)=0 x=-8 or x=7,
other roots are not real
2 4
10. (3x+1) (x+7)(x – 2) = 0 x=-1/3(two roots) or
x= -7or x=2 (four roots)

B. Establishing a
purpose for the Motive Questions:
lesson 1. What do you call the given equations? (expected
answer: polynomial equations)

2. Describe the roots of an equation. (expected

answer: each root satisfies the conditions of the
equations.)

3. In finding the roots of an equation with degree

greater than 1, what have you noticed about the
number of roots? Can you recall a principle that
supports this?
(expected answer: the number of real roots in the
equation is less than or equal to the degree of the
equation / Fundamental Theorem of Algebra states
that every polynomial equation of degree n has at
most n real roots.)

4. Describe how to solve for the roots of an equation?

(expected answer: express each polynomial as a
product of linear factors, then apply the Zero Product
Property. If A▪B=0, then A=0 or B=0.)

5. How many roots does the equation x 2+2x+1=0

have?
(expected answer: Two roots)

C. Presenting examples Activity: Finding the Number of Roots of Polynomial

of the new lesson Equations

Some polynomial equations are given below.

Complete the table. (If a root occurs twice, count it
twice, if thrice, count it three times, and so on. The
first one is done for you.)

by applying the Zero-Product Property:

1. (x+3)(x-2)(x+1)(x-1) = 0

2. (x+5)(x-5)(x+5)(x-1) = 0

3. (x+4)2 (x-3)3 = 0

4. x(x-3)4 (x+6)2 = 0

5. x2 (x-9) = 0

Expected answer:
1. x=-3, x=2, x=-1, x=1
2. x=-5, x=5, x=-5, x=1
3. x=-4(2 times), x=3(3 times)
4. x=0, x=3(4 times), x=-6(2 times)
5. x=0(2 times), x=9

F. Developing Mastery ACTIVITY: Think-Pair-Share

Consider the following polynomial equations. At

most how many real roots does each have?

1. x20- 1 = 0 expected answer: (20)

2. x3 – 2x2- 4x + 8 = 0 (3)
3. 18 + 9x5- 11x2- x23+ x34 = 0 (34)

G. Finding practical Group Activity:

applications of Think of real life situations where you can apply
concepts and skills your knowledge on roots of polynomial equations.
in daily living
Possible answers:
1. By engineers an engineer designing a roller coaster
would use polynomials to model the curves, while
a civil engineer would use polynomials to design
roads, buildings and other structures.
2. In our supermarkets You've probably used a
polynomial in your head more than once when
shopping. For example, you might want to know
how much three kgs of flour, two dozen bananas
and three packets of bread cost. Before you check
the prices, construct a simple polynomial, letting
"f" denote the price of flour, "e" denote the price of
a dozen banana and "m" the price of one pac. Of
bread costs. It looks like this: 3f + 2e + 3m. Then
you do the calculations according to the MRP.

H. Making Guide Questions for Generalization:

Generalizations and
abstractions about  What is polynomial equation?
the lesson (Expected answer: It is an equation that can be written
in the form anxn+ an-1xn-1+ an-2xn-2+…a1x+a0 =0)
 What do you observe about the relationship
between the number of roots and the degree of a
polynomial equation?
(Expected answer: The number of roots of
polynomial equations is equal to the degree of the
polynomial. This is known as Fundamental
Theorem of Algebra which states that, if P(x)=0 is
a polynomial equation of degree n and with real
coefficients, then it has at most n real roots.)
 If a root occurs twice, the root is called a root
multiplicity 2. In general, if a root occurs n
times, it is called a root of multiplicity n.

I. Evaluating learning Find the roots of the following polynomial equations:

1. x(x-3) = 0
2. (x-2)(x+6)=0
3. (x+1)2(x-5)3=0
4. x3(x2-5x-6)=0

Expected answer:
1. x=0, x=3
2. x=2, x=-6
3. x=-1 of multiplicity 2, x=5 of multiplicity 3
4. x=0 of multiplicity 3, x=6, x=-1

J. Additional Given the completely factorized polynomial:
