Content Standards
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of measures of position.

Performance Standards
The learner is able to conduct systematically a mini research applying the different statistical
methods.

Learning Competencies
The learner illustrate the following measure of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles.

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to
a. Illustrate decile for ungrouped data
b. Solve for the nth decile for ungrouped data
c. Apprecite the values of patience and perseverance in solving for the nth decile for
ungrouped data

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Measure of Position
b. Sub Topic: Decile for Ungrouped Data
c. Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Material 10
Mathematics for the 21 st Century Learner
Smart in Math 10
d. Code: M10SP-IVa-1
e. Materials: Power point, worksheets

III. Procedure
A. Pre-Developmental Activities
a. Prayer and Sharing Time
b. Checking of Attendance
c. Motivation (Individual)
Name of activity: 4 pics 1 word
B. Review (By Pair)
Word problem integrated to MAPEH.
- Aqua Running has been promoted as a method for cardiovascular conditioning for
the injured athlete as well as for the others who desire for a low impact aerobic
workout. A study reported in the journal of Sports Medicine investigated the
relationship between exercise cadence and heart rate by measuring the heart rate
of 20 healthy volunteers at a cadence of 48 cycle per minute (a cycle consisted of
two steps)
The data are listed here:
87 109 79 80 96 95 90 92 96 98 101 91 78 112 94 98 94 107 81 96

Find the lower and upper quartile of the data using Mendenhall and Sincich Method.

Answer:

78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 87 , 90 , 91 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 98 , 99 , 101 , 107 , 109 , 112 , 113 , 114 , 115 , 120

n = 20

Lower Quartile (Q 1 ¿: Upper Quartile (Q 3 ¿:

Position of Q 1= ( n + 1) Position of Q 3= ( n + 1)
4 4

Position of Q 1= ( 20 + 1) Position of Q 3= ( 20 + 1)
4 4

Position of Q 1= ( 21) Position of Q 3= ( 21 )
4 4
21 63
Position of Q 1= Position of Q 3=
4 4
Position of Q 1=5.25 Position of Q 3=15.75
ROUND UP: ROUND UP:
Position of Q 1 = 6 Position of Q 3 = 16
Therefore, the value of Q 1 = 90 Therefore, the value of Q 3 = 112

C. Developmental Activities

In finding the nth decile of a given data is like finding the nth quartile.
1
Position of D 1 = (n+1)
10

2
Position of D 2 = (n+1)
10

3
Position of D 3 = (n+1)
10
.
.
.
.
9
Position of D 9 = (n+1)
10
Example 1: Real life applications integrated to Values Education

Solution:
1st step: Arrange the data in ASCENDING ORDER:
10 | 15 | 20 | 21 | 23 | 24 | 25 | 26 | 27 | 30 | 31 | 35 | 38 | 39
| 40 | 41 | 45 | 47 | 50
2 nd step: Find n (number of elements):
n = 19
rd
3 step: Use the formula:
5
Position of D 5 = (n+1)
10

1
Position of D 5 = ( 19 + 1 )
10
5
Position of D 5 = (20 )
10

100
Position of D 5 =
10

Position of D 5 = 10

4th step: Find the value of position in the arranged data.

Value of D 5 = 30
Example 2: Real life applications integrated to Science

Solution:
1 st step: Arrange the data in ASCENDING ORDER:
27 | 28 | 29 | 29.5 | 30 | 30.8 | 31.5 | 32 | 32.5 | 33
nd
2 step: Find n (number of elements):
n = 10
rd
3 step: Use the formula:
1
Position of D 1 = (n+1)
10

1
Position of D 1 = ( 10 + 1 )
10

1
Position of D 1 = ( 11 )
10

11
Position of D 1 =
10

Position of D 1 = 1.1

Round up:
Position of D 1 = 2

Therefore the value of D 1 = 28

D. Generalization
What is Decile?
Deciles are the nine score points which divided a distribution into ten equal
parts.

What is the formula in getting the nth decile of a given data?

1
Position of D 1 = (n+1)
10
2
Position of D2 = (n+1)
10
3
Position of D 3 = (n+1)
10
.
.

9
Position of D 9 = (n+1)
10
Can you arrange the steps in solving the nth decile of a given data?
___ Find the value of position in the arranged data.
___ Use the formula
___ Arrange the data in ascending order
___ Find n (number of elements)

E. Evaluation (By group)

( Word problems written in cartolina will be given by the teacher to each
group )
Differentiated Instruction:
- The teacher prepared 4 visuals with the same word problem. Two of the visuals
have steps to follow in solving decile of ungrouped data while the other two don’t
have.
- Word problem with steps to follow will give a chance to the group of below
average students to fully master the topic.
