Measures of Position (Ungrouped)

Lesson 3
Objectives
1. I can illustrate the following measures of position
ungrouped data;

2. I can calculate a specified measure of position of a set

of ungrouped data; and

3. I can show the step by step procedure in solving

problems involving measures of position ungrouped
data.
Quartiles
- quartiles are the score points which divide a
distribution into four equal parts.

Formula for Quartile Position
Example
Find the first, second and third quartile, given the scores
of 9 students in their mathematics activity.
1, 27, 16, 7, 31, 7, 30, 3, 21
Step 1: Arrange the data into ascending order
1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31
Step 2: Find the Position Step 3: Interpolation
the value of the first
quartile is 5.
Step 2: Find the Position Since the answer is
not in decimal form,
no need to do the
interpolation. the value of the
second quartile is 16.
Step 2: Find the Position Step 3: Interpolation
the value of the third
quartile is 28.5.
Deciles
- the deciles are the nine score points which divide a
distribution into ten equal parts.

Formula for Decile Position
Example
Find the 7th decile, given the scores of 11 students in
their mathematics activity.
1, 27, 16, 7, 31, 7, 30, 31, 3, 4, 21
Step 1: Arrange the data into ascending order
1, 3, 4, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31, 31
Step 2: Find the Position Just get rid of the
decimal number the value of the 7th
and take the whole decile is 27
number, which is 8.
It means that the 7th
decile position is at
8th place
Percentile
- the percentiles are the ninety-nine score points
which divide a distribution into one hundred equal parts,
so that each part represents the data set.
Formula for Percentile Position
Example
Find the 58th percentile, given the scores of 10
students in their mathematics activity.
1, 27, 16, 7, 31, 7, 30, 3, 4, 1
Step 1: Arrange the data into ascending order
1, 3, 4, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31
Step 2: Find the Position Just get rid of the
decimal number and the value of the
take the whole 58th decile is 16
number, which is 6. It
means that the 58th
percentile position is
at 6th place
