QUADRATIC EQUATIONS: FACTORING

Title
I. Introduction:
You have learned the steps in solving quadratic equations by
factoring. You will try to deepen your understanding about solving quadratic
equations by factoring by doing the activities in this worksheet. Read the
different exercises carefully and if there are parts of which you will
encounter difficulty, tell it to your parents for their assistance and to your

teacher as well if his/her guidance is needed. Enjoy doing your tasks!

II. MELC (with code):
Solves quadratic equations by: (a) extracting square roots; (b)
factoring; (c) completing the square; and (d) using the quadratic formula.
M9AL-Ia-b-1 (MELC page. 184)

III. Strategy:

A. Explore:

Let’s Remember
Before we start our lesson for today, let us review first our last
discussion. Can you find the solution/s of quadratic equation by extracting
square roots? If so, try the exercise below.
Activity 1: Find roots of the following.
1. x2 + 2 = 0
2. x2 – 64 = 0
3. x2 = 0
4. 3x2 = 48
5. 2x2 – 8 = 0
Let’s Connect
Natural phenomena have different factors why they occur. In this
activity, determine whether the following are factors that affect flooding.
Write F it is a factor and N if it is not.
_____1. Heavy Rains
_____2. Dynamite fishing
_____3. Smoking
_____4. Illegal logging
_____5. Urbanization

B. Learn:

Let’s Believe
Now, let us study to deepen our understanding on how to solve
quadratic equations by extracting square roots. Some quadratic equations
can be solved easily by factoring. To solve such quadratic equations, the
following procedure can be followed:
 Transform the quadratic equation into standard form ( ax 2 +bx +c=0 ) if
necessary.
 Factor the quadratic expression.
 Apply the zero product property by setting each factor of the quadratic
expression equal to 0.
 Solve each resulting equation.
 Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the
original equation.
Example: x2 + 3x + 2 = 0 Zero Product Property:
(x + 2)(x + 1)= 0 x + 2 = 0; x + 1 = 0
x = –2; x = –1
Check:
x2 + 3x + 2 = 0 ; x2 + 3x + 2 = 0
(–2)2 + 3(–2) + 2 = 0 ; (–1)2 + 3(–1) + 2 = 0
4–6+2=0 ; 1–3+2=0
0=0 ; 0=0

Activity 3: “Alam ko ‘yan, ako pa!”
Solve the following quadratic equations by factoring.
1. x2 + 7x + 12= 0
2. t2 – 9t + 20 = 0
3. s2 = 25
4. v2 +3v – 18 = 0
5. h2 + 5h + 6 = 0

Activity 4
There are a lot of concrete application for quadratic equations. Here are
some sample problems of real-life situations. Try answering them!
1. Suppose the area of a house is 96 m2 and the length of the house is
4m longer than the width. Find the length and width of the house.
2. A carpenter wants to make a bigger table. The current table he has
dimension of 2 meters by 3 meters. If he plans to enlarge the table so
that the total area is 20 square meters, what same measurement
should be added to the length and width?

D. Apply:

Let’s Summarize
Answer the following questions below.
1. Can we use factoring in solving quadratic equation in the form x 2 = k
where k is greater than 0? If yes, give at least 2 examples.
2. Do you agree that not all quadratic equations can be solved by
factoring? Explain.
3. Do you agree that x2 + 5x – 14 = 0 and 14 – 5x – x2 = 0 have the same
solutions? Show your solution to justify your answer.
