Module Quarter 2 Module 5,sales flyers, blackboard, paper
and pencil

III. PROCEDURE

A. ) Prayer: The Grade 5 pupils will recite the opening prayer.

B. ) Review:
Question
1. How do we multiply decimal numbers?

Answer: Step 1 Multiply just like whole numbers

Step 2 Count the decimal places in the factors
Step 3 The number of decimal places in the product is equal to the sum of
the decimal places in the factors.
2. What is the product when we multiply the following decimal numbers?

1. 0.6 2. 4.31 3. 0.6

X 6 X 2 X 2.1

Answer:
3 1
1. 0.6 2. 4.31 3. 0.6
X 6 X 2 X 2.1
3.6 8.62 06
+ 12

C. ) Motivation:

1. Give each pupil or group of pupils a sales flyer and their prices.
2. Each pupil or group chooses an item from the flyer and writes down the items
name and price.
3. Call a pupil’s name at random. That pupil calls out a number of items to buy,
such as “Buy four!”
4. Every pupil (or group) estimates the product of their items price and the
number that was chosen.

For example: Marc chose a hamburger that cost 50.00 pesos. His classmate said “Buy
five,” so Marc estimates the product of five and 50.

5. Repeat as many times as desired.

D. ) Presentation

Present the new lesson to the pupils by letting them answer the following
activities independently for 5 to 10 minutes.

Directions: Solve for the estimated product. Write the letter of your choice on your
paper.

1. 5.4 X 2.8 = A) 10 B) 15 C) 20 D) 25

2. 1.9 X 3.2 = A) 4 B) 5 C) 6 D) 7

3. 8.5 X 9.7 = A) 72 B) 80 C) 81 D) 90

4. 3.5 X 6.1 = A) 20 B) 21 C) 24 D) 28

5. 10.5 X 2.9 = A) 20 B) 30 C)33 D) 35

Study the problem below.

A farmer needs to buy 10.5 kg of organic fertilizer for his crops. Each kilogram
of fertilizer costs P 8.25. About how much will the farmer need to buy fertilizer?

Questions:

1. Who needs to buy fertilizer for the crops?

2. Why do crops need fertilizers?

3. How many kilograms of fertilizer does the farmer need?

4. How much does a kilo of fertilizer cost?

Downloaded by Sarah Jane Villete (sarahjane.villete@icloud.com)

5. What is asked in the problem?
E. ) Discussion

For you to be able to solve for the estimated amount of money needed by the farmer
to buy fertilizer, you need to learn how to estimate the product of decimal number.
To do that, we follow the following steps:

STEP 1 Round off first each decimal number to the nearest whole number
(ones’ place) before multiplying.

Example: 10.5 11 (rounded off to the nearest ones) x

8.25 8 (rounded off to the nearest ones)

Note: In rounding off decimal numbers. We follow the general rule for
rounding.
● If the number you are rounding is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, round the
number up. Example: 47 rounded to the nearest ten is 50.
● If the number you are rounding is followed by 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, round
the number down. Example: 43 rounded to the nearest ten is 40.

STEP 2 Multiply the estimated factors. Write the estimated product.

Example: 10.5 11
x 8.25 8
88
Answer: The farmer will need about ₱ 88.00 to buy the fertilizer.

How did you estimate your answer? What did you do with the decimal before
multiplying?

Let’s study and analyze the problem

Nilo will make five clotheslines. Each clothesline should be

8.6m. About how many meters of rope does he need to make the
clotheslines?

Questions:

1. What will Nilo make?

2. How many clotheslines will he make?

3. How long will each clothesline be?

4. What is being asked in the problem?

Downloaded by Sarah Jane Villete (sarahjane.villete@icloud.com)

5. What are the given data that will help you solve the problem?
For us to solve Nilo’s problem, we need to follow these steps:

STEP 1: Understand and know what is being asked in the problem.

Asked: the estimated length of rope Nilo needed to make five clotheslines

STEP 2:
Write the given facts.

5 clotheslines – number of clotheslines Nilo needed to make

8.6 m - length of each clothesline

STEP 3: Identify what operation is to be used.

Operation: Multiplication

STEP 4: Solve for the answer.

8.6 ------------- 9 (rounded off to the nearest whole number)

x 5 5
45

STEP 5: Write the final answer.

Answer: Nilo needs about 45 m of rope to make five clotheslines.

F. ) Application:

A. Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct words to complete the
sentences. Choose the words from the box.

Product round off multiply

Estimated ones add

In estimating the (1) of decimal numbers, the first thing to do

is to (2) each decimal number to the nearest (3) .
Then, (4) the factors to get the (5) product.

B. Write the appropriate words on the blanks. Choose the words from the box.

answer given solution

asked operation sentence

In solving word problems, first, we need to understand and know what is (1)
. Second, we write the (2) facts. Then, we identify
what (3) is to be used to solve the problem. Next, write the (4)
in solving the problem. Finally, write the (5) to the
problem.

G. ) Generalization:

Rounding off decimals to the nearest ones is the simplest way in estimating the
product of decimal numbers.

To solve word problems, we need to know and understand what is being

asked in the problem, know the given data or facts, decide what operation is to be
used and to write the solution, and then check or review our answer.

Estimation problems usually contain the word “about” to signify that the
answer needed is an estimate.

IV. EVALUATION
