I. Introduction
Have you ever built a fence around a vegetable garden? What about
decorating the sides of an illustration board for an Art project? These
questions are examples of what you will be learning today. This learning
material will help you understand more about it and will help you develop
your mathematical skills in solving word problems through the variety of
interesting and challenging activities that awaits you.
III. Strategy:
A. Explore
Let’s Remember
You have learned already about perimeter and how to solve for the
perimeter of squares and rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and
trapezoids.
1. a. P= (2 x a) + (2 x b)
b. P= s x 4
2. c. P= s + s + s
3. d. P= (2 x l) + (2 x w)
e. P= a + b + c + d
4.
5.
Let’s Connect
Do you help your parents in doing household chores? If so, what are
the household chores that you do at home? Can you also help Elina with her
chore?
Elina’s garden has 4 sides. Each side is 8-meter long. How many
meters of fencing materials does she need around the garden?
B. Learn
Let’s Believe
What are the things that you should consider in answering the
question to help Elina? How will you get answer to the problem?
STEP 1: UNDERSTAND
a. What is Asked?
The length of fencing materials needed by Elina around the garden
b. What are Given?
4 sides, 8-meter long on each side
STEP 2: PLAN
STEP 3: SOLVE
a. Solution
P=4xs
P = 4 x 8 meters
P = 32 meters
You can check for the correct answer by adding the length of all the
sides of the fence.
8 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 32 meters
e. Answer
The length of fencing materials needed by Elina around the garden is
32 meters.
Now you’re done with routine word problems. As stated above, there
are two basic types of problem-solving. The second type of a word problem is
nonroutine word problem, it is also referred to as creative problem solving
because it requires some degree of creativity or originality. It does not have
an immediately apparent strategy for solving them. Oftentimes, these
problems can be solved in multiple ways and variety of strategies.
Let’s take the example given above.
Light posts are placed around a square park. There are 3 light
posts along each side of the park. If the distance between the posts is
25 meters, what is the distance around the park?
When answering a nonroutine word problem, the four (4)-Step Plan can be
applied: UNDERSTAND, PLAN, SOLVE, and CHECK.
The table below will help you understand how to solve the given problem in
Let’s Connect.
Step1
UNDERSTAND
Step 2
PLAN
c. Draw a picture
e. What is the
25 x 8 = n
number sentence?
Step 3
SOLVE
25 x 8 = 200 meters
f. Solution:
Step4
CHECK and LOOK
BACK
Add the distance between the light posts
around the park
25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 =
200 meters
g. Answer:
The distance around the park is 200
meters.
Great! Now that you have learned about routine and nonroutine word
problem and the 4-Step Plan in solving problems. Are you up for another
challenge?
C. Engage
Let’s Do This
Directions: Read the problem inside carefully then answer the following
questions.
Here is another activity that will help you apply your learning about
solving routine and nonroutine problems in real-life situations involving
perimeter.
1. A house will be built in a square lot with a side of 70 meters. What is the
perimeter of the lot?
a. What is asked?
b. What are given?
c. What Operation/formula can be used?
d. What is the number sentence?
e. Solution:
f. Answer:

b. What are given?
c. What Operation/formula can be used?
d. What is the number sentence?

Let’s Summarize
_______________________________
Direction: Solve each problem below using the 4-Step Plan in Problem
Solving.
3. Janet enclosed a vegetable garden with a fence. The shape of the garden
is a trapezoid whose sides measures 9 centimeters, 10 centimeters, 10
centimeters, and 13 centimeters. respectively. How long is the fence?
4. Javier and his Dad are painting a wall in the family room. The wall is 4
meter-high and 7 meter-wide. What is the perimeter of the wall?
5. The sides of a park measure 220 meters, 310 meters, 348 meters and 275
meters. If Noli ran around the park three times, what was the total distance
he ran?
