What’s New

Nelia is a hardworking saleslady at a well-known department store in

Cabanatuan City. She was assigned at the shoe department to assist the
customers.

One day, she sold 25 pairs of sneakers at 105.55 each pair. Before
the day ends, she wanted to know the total sales she had incurred. By
answering the question “How much was the total sales of the sneakers she
had sold?” she would be able to answer her problem.
To answer this problem, you have to follow and study these steps:
1. UNDERSTAND- this step refers to answering “what was being asked in
the problem?” and “what are the given facts?”

2. PLAN- this step allows you to think of what strategy or operation to be

used.

3. SOLVE- this step pertains to arranging the given number and the
operation to be used and perform the indicated operation.

3
What is It

Let us apply the steps in solving problem:

1. Understand.
a. What is asked?

The amount of sales the shoe store had for the day.

b. What are the given facts?

25 pairs of sneakers were sold at 105.55 each pair

2. Plan
Strategy: Use multiplication to find the total amount for which
the 25 pairs of sneakers were sold.

3. Solve
Align the number to be multiplied, then count the number of
decimal places of the factors. Place the decimal point in the product as
determined by the number of decimal places of the factors.

105.55 ------ two decimal places

x 25 ------ no decimal place
52775
+
21110

2638.75 ------- two decimal places

Answer:
The total of sales the shoe store had for the day is 2,638.75

Medicine

Problem:
As COVID-19 continuously affects more lives all over the world,
Pfizer is developing vaccines and medicines to cure this deadly disease. In
fact, the performance of the vaccine in the clinical trials is showing positive
results.

If 0.01 grams of a certain medicine for COVID-19 is 2.75. How much

is 34.53 grams of it?
To answer this problem, you have to bear in mind the steps you had
taken in the previous lesson:

6
What is It

Let us apply the steps in solving problem:

1. Understand.
c. What is asked?

The amount of a certain medicine.

d. What are the given facts?

0.01 grams, 34.53 grams and 2.75

2. Plan
Strategy: Use multiplication to find the amount of a certain
medicine.
3. Solve
Align first the number to be multiplied. Then count the number
of decimal places of the factors. Place the decimal point in the product
as determined by the number of decimal places of the factors.

34.53 ------ two decimal places

x 2.75 ------ two decimal place

17265
+
24171
6906____

94.9575 ------- four decimal places

Answer:
The amount of a certain medicine is 94.9575

Likewise, to multiply decimals by whole numbers, multiply them as

whole number, then simply count the number of decimal places of the factors
to determine the number of decimals in the product.
