Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any work of
the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the government agency or office
wherein the work is created shall be necessary for exploitation of such work for profit. Such

This module was designed and written for the learners to be able to:
1. compare and arrange decimal numbers (M5NS-IIb-104.2); and
2. add and subtract decimal numbers through thousandths without and
with regrouping (M5NS-IIb-106.1).

Lesson
Compare and Arrange
1 Decimal Numbers
In this lesson, you will learn how to compare and arrange decimal
numbers.
What’s In
1) 12.567
2) 15.67
3) 16.7
4) 12.46
5) 34.127
What’s New
Read the situation below.
Ben was asked to cut five pieces of wire, each one as close as possible
to 15.125 cm in length. The record shows the length of the pieces Ben cut.
Is the first piece longer or shorter than the last piece?
Record Sheet
Wire Number Length (cm)
1 15.182
2 15.147
3 15.087
4 15.097
5 15.18
2
What is It
To answer the problem, compare the length of the first piece with that
of the last piece.
In comparing decimals, we line up first the decimal points and the digits
in their corresponding place values. Begin comparing the digits with the same
place values from the leftmost digits. Use the symbols >, < or = in comparing
the digits in the same place value. Take note of the first pair of digits you see
that is different. The decimal with the bigger digit in this pair is the bigger
decimal.

2) 345.155 and 345.511
Since you already know how to compare, you are now ready to arrange
decimals.
Then, we compare digits. We compare the digits in the same place value.
We compare first the whole number digits.
15.182 15.147 15.087 15.097 15.18
As observed, 0<1. Thus, 15.182, 15.147 and 15.18 are greater than the
two decimal numbers 15.087 and 15.097.
For the 3 decimal numbers, 15.182, 15.147 and 15.18. Let us compare
the hundredths place.
15.182 15.147 15.18
15.182 15.180
4
Compare the 2 lesser decimal numbers, 15.087 and 15.097, by
comparing their hundredths place.
15.087 15.097

Lesson Adding and Subtracting
2 Decimal Numbers
In this lesson, you will learn how to add and subtract decimal numbers.
What’s New
Let us study the problem below.
Carmela cooked roasted chicken. She prepared 1.25 kilograms of
chicken and 0.251 kilogram of additional ingredients for seasoning. How
many kilograms of ingredients did she use in all? How much heavier is the
chicken than the additional ingredients?
What is It
To solve the problem, follow these simple steps.
1. Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points
lined up.
1.25
+ 0.251
6
2. Put zeros so the numbers will have the same number of decimal places.
1.250
+ 0.251
1.250
Make sure to put the
+ 0.251 decimal point in line
with the other decimal
1.501 kgs points.
1. Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points
lined up.
1.25
― 0.251
2. Put in zeros so the numbers have the same number of decimal places.
1.250
― 0.251
1.250
Make sure to put the
― 0.251 decimal point in line
with the other decimal
0.999 kg points.

More Examples:
0. 3 1
+ 0. 6 0 ③ Then, follow the procedure of adding
whole number, regroup if necessary.
0.9 1
The sum of 0.31 and 0.60 is 0.91.
- 0.56 if necessary.
The difference of 0.9 and 0.56 is 0.34
0.34

3. 3.99 4.98
II. A. Arrange the following from least to greatest. Write your answers
on separate sheet/s of paper.
III. Answer the given questions below. Write the letter of your answer
on separate sheet/s of paper.
9
What I Have Learned
Arrange the following steps by writing numbers 1-3 or 1-2 on
separate sheet/s of paper.
Begin comparing the digits with the same place values from the
leftmost digits.
Line up first the decimal points and the digits in their
corresponding place values.
Use the symbols >, < or = in comparing the digits in the same
place value.
Note: Take note of the first pair of digits you see that is different.
The decimal with the bigger digit in this pair is the bigger decimal.
If every digit in their corresponding place values are equal,
therefore, the decimal numbers are equal.

What I Can Do
Analyze the table below. Answer the following questions using the given
data. Write your answer on separate sheet/s of paper.
1. If you were going to buy a wood glue, from which store would
you buy if you want to avail the cheapest one?
3. Rank the prices of hand saw from the 3 stores from greatest to
least.

Assessment
Read each question carefully and choose the letter of the correct
answers then write them on separate sheet/s of paper.
