Lesson
Compare and Arrange
1 Decimal Numbers
In this lesson, you will learn how to compare and arrange decimal
numbers.

What’s In

Round the following numbers to the nearest underlined digit. Write

your answers on separate sheet/s of paper.

1) 12.567

2) 15.67

3) 16.7

4) 12.46

5) 34.127

What’s New
Read the situation below.

Ben was asked to cut five pieces of wire, each one as close as possible
to 15.125 cm in length. The record shows the length of the pieces Ben cut.
Is the first piece longer or shorter than the last piece?

Record Sheet
Wire Number Length (cm)
1 15.182
2 15.147
3 15.087
4 15.097
5 15.18

2
What is It
To answer the problem, compare the length of the first piece with that
of the last piece.

First piece: 15.182

Last piece: 15.18

In comparing decimals, we line up first the decimal points and the digits
in their corresponding place values. Begin comparing the digits with the same
place values from the leftmost digits. Use the symbols >, < or = in comparing
the digits in the same place value. Take note of the first pair of digits you see
that is different. The decimal with the bigger digit in this pair is the bigger
decimal.

Note that it is easier to compare if they have the same number of

digits. So,

First piece: 15.182

Last piece: 15.180

Remember that adding digit 0 on the right side of the decimal

numbers (15.18 to 15.180) does not change its value as a number.

Let’s continue comparing.

First piece: 15.182

Last piece: 15.180

2>0 15.182 > 15.18

The first piece is longer than the last piece.

More Examples

1) 12.23 and 12.3

12.23 2<3 Thus, 12.23 <12.3

12.30

Note that regardless of the preceding digits, we will base the

answer on the first pair with different values from the left most of the
number because it has a greater value.

3
2) 345.155 and 345.511

345.155 1<5 Thus, 345.155 < 345.511

345.511

Since you already know how to compare, you are now ready to arrange
decimals.

In arranging decimal numbers, all we need to do is to line up the

decimal points and the digits in their corresponding place values.
15.182
15.147
15.087
15.097
15.18

Then, we compare digits. We compare the digits in the same place value.
We compare first the whole number digits.
15.182 15.147 15.087 15.097 15.18

All of them have 15 as their whole number.

Next compare the tenths digit of the decimal numbers.

15.182 15.147 15.087 15.097 15.18

As observed, 0<1. Thus, 15.182, 15.147 and 15.18 are greater than the
two decimal numbers 15.087 and 15.097.

Now, let us compare the 3 decimals with greater values, 15.182,

15.147 and 15.18.

For the 3 decimal numbers, 15.182, 15.147 and 15.18. Let us compare
the hundredths place.
15.182 15.147 15.18

8>4 Therefore, 15.187 and 15.18 are greater than 15.147.

Compare the thousandths place of 15.182 and 15.18

15.182 15.180

2>0 Therefore 15.182 > 15.180 > 15.147

4
Compare the 2 lesser decimal numbers, 15.087 and 15.097, by
comparing their hundredths place.

15.087 15.097

9>8 Therefore 15.097 >15.087

Now, we will list the numbers from greatest to least.

Answer: 15.182, 15.180, 15.147, 15.097, 15.087
