I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of key concepts of quadratic functions.
B. Performance The learner is able to investigate thoroughly mathematical relationship in various situations,
Standard formulate real life problems involving quadratic functions and solve them using a variety of
strategies.
C. Most Essential The learners..
Learning Solves quadratic equations by:
Competencies 1. extracting square roots;
(MELCs) 2. factoring;
3. completing the square; and
4. using the quadratic formula.
(M9AL-Ia-b-1)
D. Specific Objectives At the end of the period, at least 80% of the students with at least 80% level of
proficiency, should be able to:
1. identify the factors of a quadratic trinomial;
2. apply zero product property in solving quadratic equations; and
3. Solve quadratic equations by factoring.
II. CONTENT Topic: Quadratic Equations
Face to Face Subtopic: Solving Quadratic Equations by factoring (Quadratic Trinomial a=1 and a> 1)

IV. LEARNING
ACTIVITIES
Preliminaries a. Prayer
b. Reminder of the classroom etiquette
c. Checking of attendance
d. Quick “Kumustahan”
A. Drill/Review Let the students find the product of the following.
(Elicit) 1. ( x + 5)(x + 2)
2. (x + 6)(x + 7)
3. ( x – 3)(x – 1)
4. (x + 8)(x – 4)
5. (x - 6)(x + 10)
6. ( x – 9)(x + 4)
A. Motivation “Factoring Puzzle”
(Engage) Complete the puzzle by putting the correct factors of the given quadratic trinomials.
B. Discussion of To solve such quadratic equations by factoring (a=1), the following procedure can be followed.
Concepts (Explore) 1. Transform the quadratic equation into standard form if necessary.
2. Factor the trinomial.
3. Apply the zero product property by setting each factor of the quadratic expression equal
to 0.

Zero Product Property

If the product of two real numbers is zero, then either of the two is equal to zero or both numbers
are equal to zero.

4. Solve each resulting expression.

5. Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the original equation.
C. Developing Solve the following quadratic equations by factoring.
Mastery (Explain) 1. x2 – 7x - 30 = 0 6. x2 – 5x = 36
2. x – 4x – 21 = 0
2
7. x2 = - 25 – 10x
3. x2 –11x - 26 = 0 8. 4s2 + 9 = 12s
4. x + 5x = - 6
2
9. 81 - 4x2 = 0
5. y – y – 6 = 0
2
10. 11r + 15 = -2r2
D. Application and Let the students answer each of the following problems.
Generalization 1. The product of two consecutive negative, odd integers is 3. Find the two integers.
(Elaborate) 2. Picasso is unhappy with his 4-inch-wide frame, so he decides to put a frame with a
different width around his canvas. The total area of the canvas and the new frame is
given by the polynomial h2 +12 h+27 , where h represents the height of the canvas.
Determine the width of the new frame.

 How do we factor quadratic trinomials whose a = 1?

 Are all quadratic trinomials factorable?
 How do we solve quadratic equations by factoring?
E. Evaluation Let the students answer Posttest of Quarter 1 Module 3 (Assessment).
F. Additional/ Quote to Ponder:
Enrichment “Breaking down big problems into smaller pieces gives better solution”.
Activity (Extend)
Guided Questions:
1. How do you solve your problems/challenges in life?
2. Is it important to break down these huge problems into smaller pieces?
