√𝐴2+𝐵2

2. Greetings
3.Checking of attendance

asked to report the class attendance
4.Review of past lesson

Review:

Before we start our new lesson,

Let’s have a short recap on your
previous lesson. Anyone from the
class who has a good memory from
the discussion?
(Student 1) Ma’am, our previous lesson
was all about the equation of a line.

Very good, anyone who can tell

me, what are the Different Forms of
Equation of a Line?
(Student 2) Ma’am, point slope form,
two point form, slope intercept form,
intercept form and normal form.
Very good!! Did you understand
class?

Yes ma’am

A. Activity

In this picture, justify who will

cover the shortest distance to the
final cheese line?

B. Analysis

Based on our activity, how did you

identify who covered the shortest
distance to the final line?
(Student 4) (Raise hand) Ma’am, we
can see the distance of each pictures
that the middle one is closest to the final
cheese line than the others.

Okay! Very good!

C. Abstraction

For today we will be discussing the

topic about Distance from point to a
line.

The distance from point (x1,y1) to a

line (Ax1 + By1 + C = 0), where
both a and b cannot be equal to
zero. If line is vertical or horizontal,
then the distance is just the
horizontal/vertical distance.
So, the distance (or perpendicular
distance), D, from point P (x1,y1) to
a line L: Ax + By + C = 0 is given
by d = Ax1 + By1 + C
√A2 + B2

For example, Find the length of

perpendicular drawn from point A
(1,9) to the line -5x + 12y + 13 = 0

We recall the distance (or

perpendicular distance), D, from
point P (x1,y1) to a line L: Ax + By
+ C = 0 is given by? What? (Student 1) Ma’am! d = Ax1 + By1 + C
√A2 + B2

Okay! Very Good!

From the point A, we have x1 = 1

and y1 = 9. From the equation of L,
we have a = -5, b = 12 and c = 13.
We substitute these values into the
formula and evaluate.

d = -5(1) + 12(9) + 13
√ (-5)2 + (12)2

= 116
√169

d = 116
13

Therefore, the distance from point

A (1,9) to a line -5x + 12y + 13 = 0
is 116 length units.
13

So, the distance from point to a line

in a vector form

For example, determine the

distance between the origin and the
line. R = (1,4) + s (-1,2). s € R.

So, r = (1,4) + s (-1,2) this given

convert to cartesian form:
d = Ax0 + By0 + C
√A2 + B2

Best direction for

r = (1,4) + s (-1,2)

m = (-1,2) then convert

into a normal term the given s (-
1,2) swap into a positive.
Therefore, n = (2,1)
a b
we need covert it into cartesian
form. Line: 2x + y + c = 0, P0
(point) (1,4) from the given r.

x1 y1

substitute the value x and y into a

given line.
L: 2x + y + c = 0
2(1) + 4 + c = 0
2+4=6+c=0
c = -6
In cartesian form: 2x + y -6 = 0.
The distance from origin (0,0).

d = 2(0) + 1(0) – 6 = 0
√22 + 12

= -6 x √5
√5 √5
d = 6. √5 Yes, Ma’am!
5

Do you understand class?

(Student 5) (Raise hand)

Very good! Okay another example.

Find the distance from the

point (3,-4) to line 6x-8y=5. The given point is (3,−4) thus x1 =
3 and y1 = −4. But the line 6x − 8y = 5 is
written in standard form.
Okay. Mr. Flores

(Student 8) Ma’am! (Raise Hand) 6x -

Very Good! But we need to convert 8y -5 = 0
it to general form. So, the formula
of general form is ax + by + c = 0.
Who wants to try?
(Student 1) a = 6, b = -8 and c = -5

Very Good! What are the values of

a,b and c?

Very Good! So, we have all the

values needed to calculate the
distance from the point to a line.

The formula of Distance is

d = Ax1 + By1 + C
√A2 + B2 d = 6(3) + (-8) (-4) + (-5)
√62 + (-8)2
(Spin the wheel) okay Ms.
Maligaya, Substitute the value of
a,b and c into distance formula.

(Student 2) d = 18 + 32 – 5
√36 + 64
= 45
√100
= 45
Very Good! Who wants to solve? 10
d=9
2

Yes, Ma’am! (Students)

Very good!! Is that clear class?

So, I hope that you have learned a

lot from me today.

That is all for today, thank you for

listening!

D. Application
Class, I’m going to divide the class
into three groups.

Give me 5 examples about this

topic with solutions and find the
distance from a point to a line on a
graph.

IV. Evaluation
Calculate the distance from the given line and point. Round your answer to one
decimal place.
1. y = 4x - 2; (-3, 3)
2. y = -x + 5; (-1, -2)
3. 2x + 3y = 6; (7, 6)
E. ASSIGNMENT:

Find the distance from the point with the given coordinates and to the line with
the given equation.
1. (-1, 5), 3x - 4y -1 = 0
2. (2,5), 5x – 12y = 1
3. Determine the distance between the (2,4) and the line a =(1,3) + b (4,1).
