do?
Very good, can I expect all of that from you? Yes ma’am!
5. Review
Before moving on to our next topic, let’s have first a
review about our previous lesson.
What are the properties of Inequalities? The properties of inequality are:
Addition property
Subtraction property
Multiplication property
Division property

2. Presentation of the lesson

This morning we are going to discuss
about Graphing inequalities on a number line.

These are the objectives for today.

Everybody read! (Reading of objectives)
a. solve linear inequalities in one
variable algebraically;
b. apply the properties of inequality;
c. graph inequalities on a number line;
and
d.find the solution of the linear
equations in one variable by graphing.
3. Lesson proper
We know that a solution of a linear inequality in one
variable is a real number which makes the inequality
true when substituted to the variable. The set of all
solutions of an inequality is called the solution set of
the inequality.

The solution set of inequalities may be represented on

a number line.

Example 1. Graph x ˃ 6 on a number line.

Solution:

The ray indicates that the solution set of x ˃ 6 consist

of all numbers greater than 6.

Example 2: Graph x ≤ -1 on a number line.

Solution:

The ray indicates that the solution set of x ≤ -1 consist

of all numbers less than or equal to -1.
In example 1: The open circle on 6
Look at the examples given, what have you observed?
indicates that 6 is not included in the

solution set. While example no. 2 the
solid circle on -1 indicates that -1 is
included in the solution set.
Very good!

Example 3. We will now illustrate the properties of

inequality can be applied to solve linear inequalities.
1. Solve x – 2 ˃ 6 and graph the solution set.
Solution:
x–2˃6
x – 2 + 2 ˃ 6 + 2 Add +2 to both sides of the
inequality
x+0˃8
x˃8
What properties of inequality did we use? Additive inverse property
Who can graph the solution set? The graph of the solution set is:
(The teacher will call a student)

BOARDWORK: Then the students will explain their

answers to their classmates.
4. Solve x + 15 ˂ -7 and graph the solution set.
Solution:
x + 15 ˂ -7
x + 15 - 15 ˂ -7 - 15
x + 0 ˂ -22
x ˂ -22

Subtract 15 from both sides of the inequality

Additive inverse property.

The graph of the solution set is:

5. Solve 2x ≤ 8 and graph the solution set.

Solution:
2x ≤ 8
2x ≤ 8
2 2
x≤4

Divide both sides of the inequality by 2.

The graph of the solution set is:

6. Solve -3x ˃ 6 and graph the solution set.

Solution:
-3x ˃ 6
-3x ˃ 6
-3 ˃ -3
x ˂ -2
Divide both sides of the inequality by -3.
The inequality sign reverses.
The graph of the solution set is:
Any questions/clarifications about the lesson?

4. Application

5. Generalization

How can you differentiate the solid and open circle in

graphing the inequalities?

Very nice answer! The open circle, indicates that a

number is not included in the solution
set. While, the solid circle, indicates
that a number is included in the
solution set

IV. EVALUATION

Solve and graph the solution set of the following inequalities.

1. x ≥ 4
2. x ˂ -2
3. x ≤ -3
4. x ˂ 12
5. x ˃ 6
1. Solve -2x ˃ 8 and graph the solution set
2. Solve x ˃ 6 and graph the solution set
3. Solve 3x ˃ 9 and graph the solution set
4. Solve 6x ˃ 12 and graph the solution set
5. Solve -4x ˃ 16 and graph the solution set

V. ASSIGNMENT:
8. x ˃ -12
9. x ˃ 9
10. x ≤ 5
11. x ≥ 15
12. x ˂ -4
13. x ≤ 8
14. x ≥ -7
15 x ˂ 11
16. x ≥ 26
6. x ˂ -7
7. x ≤ 3
