Good morning, class! Good morning, teacher Hannah.

How are you today? We’re fine teacher.

It is great to hear that you are all fine. And now, let’s
check your attendance first. Who is absent today? None teacher.

Very good, students. Keep it up!

Let’s have first our agreements.

What will you do if the teacher is talking here in front?
Listen attentively.

What will you do if you want to answer?

Raise your hand if you want to answer.
Exactly! What else?
Do not answer in chorus.
Very good!
B. Review

Who can recall our lesson last meeting? Our lesson last meeting was all about “Linear Equation
in Two Variables”.
What is the standard form of a linear equation in two
variables? Ax + By = C

How will you write linear equation into standard form? By transforming the given linear equation into Ax + By
= C.
Exactly! What about the slope – intercept form in two
variables? y = mx + b

How will you write linear equation into slope –

intercept form? By transforming the given linear equation into y = mx
+ b.
Correct!

C. Motivation

I have a real life situation. Most of the time, we can

solved problem mentally which is easily and directly
only for small problem, but when the problem are
conflicting then, we need to use mathematical formula.
So, can you read it, ____ .

How much earning will Mr. James received when he

worked for a day as a computer technician?
P500. 00, teacher.

Correct! What if he work for an overtime, how much

additional earning he received per hour?
P100. 00, teacher.
Right!
What equation shall best represent the earnings of Mr.
James when he rendered overtime services as a
computer technician in a slope - intercept?

y = 100 x + 500
Correct answer!
With given formula we can easily, solved the problem.
But did you come up with that formula? So, we have;
Let x = no. of hours overtime of Mr. James rendered as
a computer technician
Let y = the total earnings of Mr. James as computer
technician

Let m = the amount Mr. James received for every

additional hour overtime
Let b = the amount Mr. James earned for a daily basis

Slope – intercept form: y = mx + b

y = 100 x + 500

Standard form: Ax + By = C
100 x – y = - 500

Linear Equation is an equation whose graph is a line.
In the previous discussion, it has mentioned that the
standard form of the equation of a line is, Ax + By = C.
Here in the graph, what can you see in the line in terms
of position?

The line is rising from left to right.

Good answer!
We can see that the line is rising from left to the right,
where the slope is?
Yes, it is positive. The formula of a slope (m) = rise/
run or m = y2 – y1/x2 – x1.

Positive
In this graph, the y- intercept are the point (0, -3), so
we the y – intercept (b) of -3 ; we will identify the
slope by counting to the next integer, so
rise
m=
run

2
m=
2
m=1
then, to find the equation of line, we have;
y = x -3
Standard form: Ax + By= C
x–y=3
That is how we find the equation of the line to the
graph, what if the given are not in the graph. How can
be graph it?
So, the equation of the line can be determined using
two points, the slope and a point, and the slope and
y – intercept. So, let’s find first the determined the
equation of the line if the given are:

(Answers may vary.)

1. Two points: (x1, y1) and (x2, y2)
Example: Find the equation of the line that passes
through the points (4, 3) and (5, -2) as shown on the
graph.
Solution:
Since two points are given (4, 3) and (5, -2), then, we
will use the Two-point Form defined as,
y-y1 = y2 –y1/x2- x1 (x-x1)
Step 1: Identify (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) using the given two
points (4, 3) and (5, -2).
x1 = 4 and y1 = 3; x2 = 5 and y2 = -2
Step 2: Substitute these values on the formula:
y – y1 = y2 – y1/ x2 – x1 (x – x1)
(−2 )−(3)
y–3= (x – (4))
( 5 ) −( 4)
−5
y-3 = (x – 4) Simplify
1
−5
y - 3 = ¿) (x) - ( )(4)
1
Distributive Property
y-3= -5x +20 Simplify
y-3 =3 = 5x +20 + 3 Addition Property
y = -5x + 23
Thus, the equation of a line that passes through the
points (4, 3) and (5, -2) is y = -5x + 23 or 5x + y = 23
in the standard form.
Do you understand, class? Question in finding the
equation using two points?
Okay, let’s proceed.

2. Slope and a point: m and (x1, y1)

None teacher.

Example: Write the equation of a line whose graph has

slope of 2 and a point (3, -5).
Solution:
If given a slope and a particular point, then we will use
the Point-slope Form defined as,
y-y1= m (x-x1)
Step 1: Identify the slope and a point (x1, y1)
m= 2; x1 = 3 and y1 = -5
Step 2: Substitute the given values on the formula:
y- y1 = m (x – x1)
y – (-5) = 2 (x-3)
y+5 = 2 (x-3) Simplify
y+5 = 2x – 2 (3) Distributive Property
y + 5 = 2x – 6 Simplify
y + 5 – 5 = 2x – 6 – 5 Addition Property
y = 2x – 11
Thus, the equation of a line whose graph has a slope of
2 and a point (3, -5) is y = 2x – 11 or -2x + y = - 11 in
standard form. Since, we are translating the slope –
intercept form into standard form. Since, we are
translating the slope – intercept form into standard
form, “A” should be positive. Multiply both sides by –
1 to make the equation positive. Thus, we have the
standard form of 2x – y = 11.
Do you understand class? Any questions?
I hope you really understand it. Next, we have;

3. Slope and y – intercept: m and b

Example: Find the equation of a line whose graph has a

slope of 3 and y – intercept are known. Therefore, we
will use the Slope –intercept Form defined as,
y = mx + b
Step 1: Identify the slope or m and y – intercept or b.
m = 3 and b = 2 None teacher.
Step 2: Substitute the given values on the formula:
y = mx + b.
y = (3) x + (2)
y = 3x + 2
Thus, the equation of a lone whose graph has a slope of
3 and an intercept of 2 is y = 3x + 2 or 3x – y = -2 in
the standard form.
Do you understand class? Any questions about finding
the equation of a line?
Since, you didn’t have a question. Let’s proceed to the
next activity.
