Prepared by: Patrick Cañete

Lesson Plan in Grade 8 Mathematics

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 represent a relation using (a) ordered pairs, (b) table of values, (c)
mapping diagram, (d) graph, (e) rule/equation.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Representation of Relations
B. Reference: Mathematics, Learner’s Module, pp. 138-144
C. Materials: manila paper, marker, activity cards
D. Value Focus: Cooperation

III. Procedure
A. Pre-Activity
1. Opening Prayer and Attendance
2. Drill/Review
Let the students identify orally which quadrant or axis does the
coordinates belong to.

(2,3), (4,5), (-1,9), (4,0), (0,2), (-2, -3), (0, -2), (5, -5), (10, 10)

3. Motivation
Let the students give examples of things with these categories:
(a) school supplies, (b) gadgets, (c) kitchen utensils.

4. Presentation
Out of your given examples, you can actually make a set of ordered
pairs, such as:

A = {(school supplies, ballpen), (school supplies, notebook)}

B = {(gadgets, cellphone), (gadgets, laptop)}

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
a. Grouping and instructions
Let’s divide you in three groups.
Choose your leader and secretary.

b. Working on with the activity

Have the students read the directions in the Activity Card.
Perform the activities.
2. Analysis
a. Based on your activity, what is a relation?
b. Can you give an example of a relation?
c. Is there another way of representing a relation aside from
using ordered pairs?
d. Can you represent this example, {(1,3), (2,5), (4,6), (5,7), (6,5)}
using:
d.1 Table/ Table of Values
d.2 Mapping Diagram
d.3 Graph
d.4 Equation/ Rule

3. Abstraction
a. What is a relation?
b. What are the different ways to represent a relation?

4. Application (Board work)

Mr. Salas is a writer. She can write 40 words per minute.

a) How many words can she write in 5 minutes? How about 6
minutes? 7 minutes? 8 minutes?
b) Represent your answer in ordered pairs, table of values,
mapping diagram, graph, or equation/rule.

IV. Evaluation

Represent this set of ordered pairs into:

(1,2), (2,4), (3,6), (4,8)

1. Table of Values
2. Mapping Diagram
3. Graph
4. Rule/Equation

V. Assignment
Alex can run 5 miles per hour. Given the distance he can travel per
hour, how many miles can he cover in 2 hours? How about two and a half
hours? 4 hours? 5 hours? Express your answers as:
1. Ordered Pairs
2. Table of Values
3. Mapping Diagram
4. Graph
5. Equation/rule
