 In today's COVID-19 pandemic, the factors inherent by the virus which plays a

role in significant number of deaths, one is its infectivity. The span of spread
could take 5 to 14 days before the signs and symptoms could appear. Worst
case is there are a lot who are asymptomatic.

 Ebola virus caused a number of deaths only within US. Corona virus caused a
number of deaths in the whole world

 Practice proper hand hygiene.


Review: For healthcare workers, always remember the 5 moments for Hand
washing:
1) Before touching a patient
2) Before clean/aseptic procedures
3) After body fluid exposure/risk
4) After touching a patient
5) After touching patient surroundings
• Practice cough etiquette (cover your mouth with your arm rather than your hand when
coughing)
• Avoid going into mass gatherings or crowds.
• Make it a point to clean your gadgets.
• Avoid touching your face
• Wear a face mask, IF you have any respiratory symptoms OR if your occupation
entails you to handle possible individuals with flu-like symptoms.
• Self quarantine, self-isolation, and avoidance of crowds , to keep the virus from
spreading fast.
*Handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
• Alcohol-based hand sanitizer may be used if soap and water are unavailable.
• Individuals should avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Individuals should avoid close contact with sick people.
• Sick people should stay at home (eg, from work, school).
• Coughs and sneezes should be covered with a tissue, followed by disposal of the
tissue in the trash.
• Frequently touched objects and surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
• All individuals in areas with prevalent COVID-19 should be vigilant for potential
symptoms of infection and should stay home as much as possible, practicing social
distancing (maintaining a distance of 6 feet from other persons) when leaving home is
necessary.
• Persons with an increased risk for infection − Individuals who have had close contact
with a person with known or suspected COVID-19 − International travelers (including
travel on a cruise ship)—should observe increased precautions
• Precautions for persons with increased risk for infection − Self-quarantine for at least
2 weeks (14 days) from the time of the last exposure and distancing (6 feet) from other
persons at all times − Self-monitoring for cough, fever, or dyspnea with temperature
checks twice a day.
NON-PHARMACEUTICAL INTERVENTIONS CASE ISOLATION AT HOME
• Symptomatic cases to remain at home for 7 days which is expected to reduce the
number of contacts outside the household by 75% during this timeframe. All forms of
social contact must be avoided by symptomatic individuals VOLUNTARY HOME
QUARANTINE
• If a symptomatic case is identified in the household, the entire household must
remain at home for 14 days SOCIAL DISTANCING FOR THOSE ABOVE 70 YEARS
OLD
• Individuals over 70 years of age are to practice social distancing i.e. must maintain
a 2 meter distance from other individuals
• Avoid gatherings or congregations SOCIAL DISTANCING FOR THE ENTIRE
POPULATION
• All individuals are to practice social distancing
• Non-essential use of public transport must be avoided
• Arrangements to work from home should be made
• Individuals should use remote technology to keep in touch with friends and family •
All large and small gatherings must be avoided.
