Indiscipline in Educational
Institution : Causes and
Suggestions

Causes of Indiscipline in Educational Institution:

The 5 causes of indiscipline in educational institution are as
follows: (1) Loss of Respect for Teachers (2) Lack of Ideals (3)
Defective Educational System (4) Effective Freedom-Fight (5)
Economic Crisis.

Indiscipline occurs due to ill maintenance of discipline in the

educational institution which hampers the success of
management of any educational programme. This happens
because of several factors which are regarded as the causes of
indiscipline.

(1) Loss of Respect for Teachers:

Now-a-day the cause for the indiscipline found in students is loss

of respect for the teachers. The teachers are not getting that
much respect from students which he used to get in the past. For
this, he alone cannot be blamed.

For this situation there are many factors which are
responsible are as under:

(i) In the freedom struggle, various national leaders influenced

the feeling of students sufficiently and encouraged the students
for taking active participation in that. But the teachers could not
take active participation in this fight due to many reasons. As a
result of this to some extent, they lost the devotion and respect of
students towards them.

(ii) The shortcomings of our present educational system for the

last 30 years affected the entire system and is subject to
criticisms. It affected the status of the teachers. Somehow
teachers are also criticized as they directly contact with society,
parents and pupils. People pay less respect towards this
profession as well as to teachers.

(iii) The social status of the teacher is notably low. Above reasons
are responsible partially, but the main reason is their low social
status due to low economic condition.

(iv) Demand of variety of educational facilities played important

role in reducing honour for the teachers. For providing facilities
of education, more teachers are required. This demand opened
the doors of this occupation for persons who are not the
deserving candidates. Secondly, in the schools, due to increase in
the number of students personal contact between teachers and
students become difficult.

In the past, these contacts helped the teachers a lot in getting

devotion and respect from students. But in these situations, due

to less facilities of establishing individual contact, teachers could
not avail proper respect from students.

(v) Now more stress is given on examinations. Teachers only

teach for the sake of preparing students for examinations
ignoring the real ideals and values of education. They bias
student by teaching selectively and help students in
malpractices. These facts reduced the honour towards teachers.

(vi) Generally, teachers pay more attention on private tuitions

and pay less attention to their school assignments. This has
notably helped in reducing leadership of teachers.

(2) Lack of Ideals:

Continuous pressure of poverty has helped man to destroy the

good feelings. Due to bad effects of economic dissatisfaction and
other elements, good ideals and values are neglected. After
Second World War, materialistic view-points expanded more
and more as a result of which moral level of individuals and
society continuously went down and all the efforts of man began
to indulge in earning more and more money.

Their major aim became to earn money only by Appling fair or

foul means. This materialistic view compelled men to leave
spiritual values and accept hostility, jealousy, exploitation and
dishonesty etc. This expanded abruptly in the society. Students
were affected by these bad customs prevalent in the society.

(3) Defective Educational System:

In creating indiscipline among students, defects of educational

system also have an important part. Defective educational

children. Here, we discuss those main points (defects) which are
held responsible for creating indiscipline in students.

(i) Current educational system is more theoretical and classical.

It’s main objective is to produce clerks only. Through this
development of cognitional senses, physical capabilities are
neglected. It does not pave any way for development of moral
and ethical values.

(ii) In it, stress is given on examinations. In fact, the

examinations have become end. Children study for passing
examinations only and teachers also teach them only for getting
certificates or degrees. It’s bad effect appears in various kinds of
immorality.

(iii) Authoritative character has helped a lot in the increase of

indiscipline in students. In spite of being democratic society in
school still dictatorship is adopted. With the result of this the
students are expected to follow order with no conscience. This
condition helps them in being in-disciplined.

(4) Effective Freedom-Fight:

In the period of freedom fight people were asked not to follow

improper laws and rules, but sometimes it becomes difficult to
differentiate in between right and wrong laws. When the
students develop a habit of breaking some laws, they also
develop the habit of violating all sorts of laws. Today the main
reason of indiscipline among children lies in this fact. In other
words, it can be said that students did those works in the battle
for liberation to which, they do not feel any offence in repeating
the same today also.

(5) Economic Crisis:

Economic crisis has helped sufficiently to increase indiscipline.

When the Britishers left India, the economic condition of the
country was not good. After independence government of India
took steps to make it better. But the population explosion created
many difficulties in improving the economic condition which
affected students also. Due to extension in educational facilities,
students of various classes came to study in schools. There were
some students whose economic condition was not good.

As a result of which they faced dejection and dissatisfaction due

to economic crisis in their student life. They feel dejection when
they went outside in search of job after having finished their
education. Now in social life they do not find themselves capable
of earning their livelihood, as they face the problem of
unemployment. This situation helped a lot in creating
disappointment and dissatisfaction in their hearts and tension in
their minds.

Suggestion for the Removal of Indiscipline for

Educational Institution:
For the solution of problems of indiscipline, various learned
persons have given different suggestions; some main
suggestions are given here:

(i) Important steps should be taken for improving the economic

and social condition of teachers.

(ii) Proper arrangements should be made for establishing the
personal contact between teachers and students.

(iii) School authorities should have sympathetic view towards

problems of students.

(iv)For eradicating defects of educational system, University

Education Commission, Secondary Education Commission and
Kothari Commission have given very important suggestions.
According to these suggestions, framework of education should
be made and practical aspects of education should be stressed.

(v) The atmosphere of school should be made ethical and

sympathetic so that development of feeling for high ideals in
students, respect and work according to them may be done.

(vi) Improvement should be brought up in examination system.

(vii) For enabling students to earn their livelihood, stress should

be given on the importance of labour, work-experience and
vocational education, so that they may escape themselves from
disappointment and dissatisfaction in their future life.

(viii) Intimate relations should be established in school with

home and the society. Parents of students and the leaders of the
society should also be made responsible for solution of this
problem

(ix) Employment opportunities should be provided with easy

access.
