CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1: Background

With the rapid development in technology, institutions are fast embracing use of the same and

huge adoption happening in the learning institutions. There is huge investment in technology and

part of the infrastructural support includes provision of internet. The availability of ICT, its ease

in use and the numerous immediate need it can meet has turned into a key player in advancing

efficiency. (Ansah, 2013).

Integration of ICT in learning institutions has an added advantage. It provides a learning

platform for both the students and the teachers which has impact in the teaching and learning

methods (Rowleau et.al.,2015). Internet plays a vital role in the teaching, research and learning

process in academic institutions (Emeka & Nyeche, 2016)

1.2 Statement of the problem

Lack of functioning ICT health care infrastructure is associated with inefficiencies and this is

also evident in learning institutions. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have

the potential to transform the education sector and address the challenges. Across Kenya and

Africa, there are many ongoing projects that attempt to improve the education sector though

suffers infrastructural challenges that include internet connectivity (Yebowaah, 2018). This study

therefore aims at determining the effects of intermittent internet connectivity to learning

outcomes of students in Butere TVC, Kenya. the findings from this study will be used to inform

policy makers and mangers at learning institutions to provide internet infrastructure because

provision of internet infrastructure in schools is a key strategy to promoting academic

performance.

7
1.3 Purpose of the study

1.4 Objectives

1.4.1 Broad objective

To determine the effects of intermittent internet connectivity to learning outcomes of students in

Butere TVC, Kenya

1.4.2 Specific objectives

This study had three specific objectives as stated below: -

1. To establish frequency of internet use on learning processes at Butere TVC

2. To identify the frequency of intermittent internet connectivity at Butere TVC

3. To establish the effect of intermittent internet connectivity on student performance at

Butere TVC.

1.5 Research questions

This study attempts to answer the following research questions; -

1. What are the frequencies of internet use on learning processes at Butere TVC?

2. What is the frequency of intermittent internet connectivity at Butere TVC?

3. What are the effects on intermittent internet connectivity on student performance at

Butere TVC?

1.6 Significance of the study

The findings of this study will help in improving the learning process through provision of

reliable internet connectivity to ensure full benefits of technology in learning institutions. Stable

connectivity will also support e-learning platforms.

1.7 Limitation of the study

1.8 Definition of terms

Intermittent connectivity: When your modem/router drops your broadband connection at

random intervals.

Internet: A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication

facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1: Background

Globally, many learning institutions have embraced use of technology in their day to day

activities. This comes in handy in supporting the students to access learning material, conduct

research and prepare for their examinations. Providing stable connectivity in this institutions

supports the transmission of knowledge. Poor electric power supply and internet services, limit

full application of ICT services therefore need to improve electricity and electronic

communications that may otherwise affect learning process (Drury, 2015). Over the last decades,

internet connectivity has improved tremendously and is available everywhere including schools.

Studies report shows that access to information can influence the academic performance of

students (Yebowaah, 2018)

The Internet has opened the door to a new way of learning. The wealth of information available

therein exceeds that of any physical library. Of the various uses the internet can be put to,

academic purpose occupies the highest enviable position as far as students are concerned.

However, they face a lot of challenges using the internet for academic purpose. Such as incessant

power outage and network failure. Tertiary institution should ensure that adequate internet

services are been provided in their respective libraries, so as to enable students meet their

information needs. (Oghenetega, I & Mercy A, I, 2014)

Integration of ICT into education sector could be one of the steps towards addressing academic

challenges. A study conducted on students’ academic performance and internet usage showed

that 79% of the respondents accepted that their academic performance improved by using the

10
internet. 8% believed that their GPA improved remarkably as a result of the use of the Internet,

6% of the respondents agreed that their GPA has been declining, 28% responded that it helps

them in preparing better for examinations (Ogedebe, 2012).

Another study conducted on Internet Usage on the Academic Performance of Undergraduates

Students at University of Abuja, Nigeria showed that 111(55%) of respondents use the internet

every day indicating that majority of students use the internet every day. This enhances the skill

and capability of students and assist them in studies (Emeka & Nyeche, 2016).
