Positive result indicates presence of antibodies to HIV virus. False positive results are also seen in other diseases. It is
recommended to follw up a positive result with a specific test like Western Blot.
Negative result does not always eliminate risk of HIV infection. A window period (where the test may be negative) is seen for few weeks after infection.
