GAME OF THE WEEK! • BOWIE STATE vs. VIRGINIA STATE

• BOWIE STATE OUTSCORES VIRGINIA STATE!

One week after knocking Chowan from the unbeaten ranks in a CIAA North show-
down, Bowie State came up big again outscoring Virginia State 51-44 in another N. Div. chal-
lenge.
The teams combined for 1,007 total yards (VSU 505, BSU 502).
BSU (6-1, 4-0 CIAA N) put together three long drives to jump out to a 21-0 lead and
led 21-3 at the break. VSU pulled within 21-17 after a Roy Jackson III TD reception from
Chauncey Caldwell (former NCCU QB) and a 74-yard Upton Bailey TD run with 9:42 to go in
the third quarter.
But BSU surged again, scoring on a 27-yard interception return of a Caldwell pass by
Myles Woolfolk and a 4-yard run by QB Ja’rome Johnson (14-25-1, 246 yds., 3 TDs, 13 carries,
63 yds., 2 TDs) to go up 35-17 with 2:44 left in the third. VSU’s Andre Jackson returned the
ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a TD only to see BSU’s Tevin Singleton return the blocked PAT at-
tempt 98 yards for two points. When the smoke cleared, the teams entered the final period with
BSU up 37-23. Bowie State QB
BSU struck first on a 12-yard TD pass from Johnson to Darious Bowman to go up 44- JA’ROME JOHNSON
23 at the 11:54 mark. VSU responded as Darius Hagans (22 carries, 199 yards) broke off a 38-
yard run in a three-play, 79-yard drive capped by a TD pass from Caldwell (11-27-1, 139 yds., 4
TDs) to Marquis Phillips. On the second play after the score, BSU RB Calil Wilkins fumbled
with VSU recovering. Caldwell hit Phillips again from 8 yards out to pull VSU even at 44 with
9:36 to play.
BSU’s Kwincy Hall returned the kickoff 51 yards to the VSU 43. Six plays later, Johnson
(14-25-1, 246 yds., 1 TD) hit Bowman on a 24-yard scoring pass to put the Bulldogs up 51-44.
VSU (2-4, 2-2 N) drove into BSU territory on its final two possessions. The final one
ended at the BSU 14 from where Caldwell threw four incompletions.
