Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Computer programs that facilitate the creation and editing of products in the design phase which,
before production begins, allow the business to:

 Create 3D models of the product design

 Easily adjust, modify and improve the design
 Calculate the precise measurements and costs of the design
 Feed the design into machines to make the design 100% accurately

Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)

The products of the business are assembled/ produces through programmed instructions from a
computer which controls the machinery, tools, robots and equipment that make the product

How it works?

Step 1: Product is designed using CAD, specifying the exact dimensions, materials, etc.

Step 2: Design adjusted, modified and improved until it meets the needs of the customer/market

 Change the measurements to make the product easier to make

 Customer doesn’t like this feature, remove it
 If we reduce the size of this X, then we can save time and money making the product
 What if we change this part for this part, how does that change the design?
 Will the product fit into our trucks and into our factory and be easy to assemble?

Step 3: Design turned into programmed instructions outlining exact steps to make the product

Step 4: Design fed into machines, robots and equipment to begin CAM
