VISTA® Tape – Polygon Editing of SEG-Y Files

The following steps detail how to use VISTA Tape to select traces inside or outside of a polygon
boundary and output to a new SEG-Y file.

Polygon File Format


The format of the Polygon ASCII file is shown below:

Note: The coordinate values in the image above are (x10) to match the header value in the input SEGY
File. The last coordinate paring matches the first in order to close the polygon.

Read a SEG-Y file into VISTA Tape


Run the VISTA Tape program and select the “Y” icon to run a SEG-Y disk file read/write operation.

From the drop down menus select: Standard SEG-Y => IN:Disk-File Input => OUT:Disk-File

Click the <READ> icon to browse for the input SEG-Y file.

Select your INPUT SEG-Y file and click <Open>.

Select the location and name for the OUTPUT SEG-Y file that will be editing using the polygon.

Click <Save> to continue.

Input the Polygon File


On the Parameters display window that opens, select the Polygon Tab.

Toggle on the check box to <Select Traces by Polygon Area>.

Select the option to keep traces <Inside Polygon> or <Outside Polygon>.

Select the “…” icon to browse for the input polygon file, select the file and click <Open> to continue.

Display a Grid of the Polygon File


Select the <VIEW> icon to display a grid of the polygon coordinates.

Click the Red X in the top right corner to close the grid display window.

Define the Location of the X/Y coordinates


Next, we will need to define the header location of the coordinates in the Input SEG-Y file.

Select the option <Defined X/Y Headers> and select the header to read from.

Click <OK> to begin writing the new edited SEG-Y file.
