Tunable DWDM Transceivers Featuring

Flextune™ Wavelength Self-Tuning

Benefits of Wavelength-Tunable DWDM Transceivers

 Pluggable DWDM optical transceivers are a great way to CH.1

lower your network infrastructure CapEx by transmitting CH.2

.
multiple data links on a single fiber optics pair. .
.
CH.40
 However, they may add operational complexity and OpEx by having
to source multiple wavelength-specific Part Numbers/SKUs.

 Wavelength-Tunable DWDM Transceivers offer

considerable operational savings:
 Only a single Part Number/SKU is needed to cover the full
C-band (instead of 40 or 96). Duplex T-SFP+ Bidirectional T-SFP+

 The required replacement inventory for sparing is significantly

reduced.

© Finisar Corporation 2
Ok, But… Which Fibers should I Use?

 However, a technician still needs to tune

each transceiver to the proper wavelength
and also match it to the proper optical
mux/demux port…

 Sometimes it’s not that obvious which optical

fiber in the rack is the correct one to connect
to the optical module…

 Having to determine which mux/demux fiber

to use gets even more complicated when
trying to track them back to a 40-port Mux
which could be a kilometer or more away…

© Finisar Corporation 3
And… How Do I Set the Wavelength?

 Technicians also may need to bring along

“tuning boxes” and laptop computers to set
each transceiver to a specific wavelength…

 Or coordinate with the NOC to configure the

right wavelength on each system port…

 Setting up 40 or more modules could take

several hours, assuming no system crashes
or “blue screen” issues…

© Finisar Corporation 4
Our Solution: Flextune™ Self-Tuning

 Flextune™ is Finisar’s patented transceiver wavelength

self-tuning feature.

 It eliminates the need to track fibers as well as the need to have

technicians carry around extra equipment to set the wavelength
of each transceiver module.

 Transceivers using this feature are truly “Plug-and-Play”,

since no host system intervention is required.

Value Proposition of Flextune™
 Up to 96 wavelength-tunable transceivers in a DWDM network will
automatically configure their wavelengths within approximately
5 minutes without any input from field technicians or the host network
equipment.

Greatly Reduces Operational Expenditures:

 Saves hours in deployment: Configuration of wavelengths is automatic – Technicians
do not have to manually set the wavelengths of the tunable transceivers or determine
which fixed-wavelength transceivers to use.
 Reduces complexity: Technicians install the wavelength tunable transceivers into any
host port and connect the jumper cables to any fiber port on the DWDM optical Mux.
 Eliminates need to track fibers from the DWDM optical Mux to the transceivers
(which could be up to 2 km away from each other).
