“Художественный перевод – это вид художественного творчества, где

оригинал выполняет функцию, аналогичную той, которую выполняет для
оригинального творчества живая действительность.” – Г.Р. Гачечиладзе,
1980

This definition tells us that the fiction translation should preserve the
communicative function of the original – that is, the translation must have on the
reader exactly the same effect that the original has. I completely agree on this,
because if a foreign language reader, having read a translation of some piece of work,
cannot catch the main idea of it, then what is the price of that translation? Or, even
worse, he interprets the meaning in exactly the opposite way, and such a translation
definitely cannot be called adequate, since the adequacy of the translation is one of
the key criteria for a successful translation.

2. “Fiction translation is the result of the combination of knowledge in

psycholinguistics, culture, history, translation competence and source language
understanding.” – ?, 1998

This definition tells us that fiction covers many aspects. It is not enough just to
have a good command of the language and be able to translate; background
knowledge is a very important factor. Many authors often turn to various other
sciences, for example, to history, so it is very important to understand what you
translate. I especially agree that literary translation requires the participation of
psycholinguistics, because this is the only way a translator can convey the
communicative effect of the original to the reader.

3. “Художественный перевод — это перевод произведений художественной

литературы. Основная задача переводчика в этом виде перевода — передать
художественно-эстетические достоинства оригинала, создать полноценный
художественный текст на языке перевода.” – В.Н. Комиссаров, 2001

Komissarov emphasizes that for a successful fiction translation it is necessary

to convey all the beauty and aesthetics of the original. This requires a good command
of literary techniques, for example, metaphor, irony, oxymorony, etc. I slightly
disagree with his definition, as he missed a lot of important things that fiction
translation requires. For example, the conveying of the communicative effect or the
general meaning of the work, since a literary text consists not only of beautiful and
memorable expressions.

4. “Можно считать художественный перевод особым видом литературно-

языкового творчества, осуществляемого на основе сопоставления
информационных свойств, объективно присущих и субъективно придаваемых
языковым единицам исходного текста, с аналогичными или подобными
свойствами единиц переводящего языка, в результате чего создается новая
вторичная знаковая система – переводной текст.” – Т.А. Казакова, 2006
The author presents us a fiction translation, focusing only on the technical
process of activity (on the choosing of translation strategies, translation choosing of
equivalents). I believe that this description is more suitable for literal translation,
rather than fiction. Despite the fact that the translation is, first of all, a secondary text,
in any case it carries something new and original, since each translator has his own
vision of the picture. Thus, translating a literary text and conveying only its words is
inadequate, since behind any literary text there is also a soul and a message.

5. “Fiction translation is a type of translation which is distinguished from translation

in general. A fiction translation must reflect the imaginative, intellectual and intuitive
writing of the author. In fact, literature is distinguished by its aesthetics.” – Bahaa-
eddin A.Hassan, 2011

This definition explains to us that each translated text has its own author, and
the translation has to convey author's own writing style: imaginative, intellectual and
intuitive. I agree with this, because, for example, most Russian authors have an
absolutely extraordinary presentation of their works; their unique style of storytelling
gives only pleasure while you read them. And it is great if the translator is able to
convey the fullness of this beauty of the original literary work. In addition, the author
of definition also emphasizes the aesthetic values of each piece of work.
