BUILT ENVIRONMENT TECHNICAL WEBINAR SERIES (DfMA TRACK):

HARNESSING DFMA AND POTENTIAL
OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
20 August 2021, 2.30pm to 4.30pm

Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) had been identified as a key enabler to bring productivity and
transformation to a higher level by allowing industry players to gain access to efficiencies that are commonly
associated with manufacturing, specialisation and repeatable processes.

This webinar will share challenges and best practices in DfMA adoption and how DfMA approach can give an edge
to projects greater agility and responsiveness to cope with uncertainties such as the current COVID-19 situation.
In addition, participants will gain insights on global trends in DfMA and the future of DfMA harnessing automation
and digitalisation.

SPEAKERS & SYNOPSIS
CHALLENGING LIMITS OF DFMA: A PPVC JOURNEY OF AVENUE
SOUTH RESIDENCE
At 56 storeys and involving more than three thousand individual PPVC modules, the Avenue
South Residence project raises unprecedented design, technical and logistical challenges that
pushes the PPVC method to new limits. With no other point of reference, Allan Tan and his team
have to rely on their past experience to tackle these challenges with creativity, innovation, and
teamwork. In this webinar, he shares in detail the numerous challenges faced by the project, and
what we can learn from it.

Mr Allan Tan
Managing Director
Allan Tan has worked in the construction field for 40 years on projects in Europe, Africa
United Tec and Asia. Spending the last 20+ years in Singapore, he has attained an enormous insight
Construction Pte Ltd into the Singapore built environment industry and engages with BCA, developers, and
consultant leaders in spearheading construction innovation and technology.

In the last 7 years, he pioneered steel and concrete PPVC system and followed through by
partnering with BCA and Consultants in pushing for continued PPVC adoption in projects
nationwide. He has successfully implemented PPVC in residential, hotel and healthcare
projects, including the then world’s tallest PPVC project (40 storeys).

In 2018, Allan set up his own company, United Tec Construction. In the company’s 3 years
of operation, they achieved an order book of S$1 billion, and have been awarded 5 PPVC
projects. The first project awarded was the Avenue South Residence, which at 56 storeys,
will be the future world record holder of the tallest PPVC structure in 2022. Despite recent
global challenges, the Avenue South Residence project is expected to be completed on
schedule partly due to the use of PPVC. He is currently focused on growing his company,
and also help the industry continue to adopt innovative methods to improve productivity.

CHANGING THE WAY WE DESIGN AND BUILD WITH 3D-CONCRETE

PRINTING
In this presentation Jordy Vos will present his vision on how the construction industry is changing
the way we design and build our buildings and infrastructure. New design technologies like
parametric designs, integrated engineering solutions and virtual reality ensure better and
faster design and engineering processes. At the same time, new construction technologies
like 3D-concrete printing ensure a seamless workflow from digital design to manufacturing.
Furthermore, Jordy will explain why 3D-concrete printing is one of the most promising
construction technologies to help increase productivity, design freedom and sustainability. He
will also present use cases of 3D-concrete printing around the world, and explain more about
Mr Jordy Vos the technology readiness level of 3D-concrete printing.
Team Leader Digital
Construction,
Witteveen+Bos,
Singapore Jordy Vos is Team Leader Digital Construction at engineering consultancy firm
Witteveen+Bos. He is based in Singapore, where his team is focussing on the
digitalisation and automation of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry.
The technology of 3D-concrete printing is one of their key focus areas, with their BIM-
to-manufacturing workflow as one of their main value propositions. Jordy worked on
a wide range of innovative design, engineering, and construction projects around the
world. As such, he is involved in 3D-concrete printing since the very first steps of the
technology. He is involved as consultant in the development of 3D-concrete printing
technology for The Housing Development Board (HDB). Besides, he helped many other
industry stakeholders to embrace 3D-concrete printing and other digital technologies.
In June 2021, he reached the top 3 of the Future Leader competition organised by the
European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations.

SPEAKERS & SYNOPSIS

DRIVING INNOVATION THROUGH DfMA

DfMA had been long talked about as key catalyst for transformation and progressively, firms
could adopt DfMA approach as niche marketable and exportable capability. This presentation
explores challenges in DfMA adoption and catalyst for projects riding on its benefits to deliver
better project outcomes, with efficiencies and profitability. Additionally, Michael will share what we
have learnt from the past and adapted to new approaches as we step into the future.

Mr Michael Crane With 18 years’ experience designing modular building systems in the UK, Michael has
Head of Innovation, seen many developments within this sector. Working as Technical Director for CIMC MBS
CIMC Modular Building enabled him to push the boundaries of product design and instil a philosophy of DfMA
System, UK across numerous projects in the UK and overseas.

Now, as Head of Innovation, Michael has the opportunity to look at the global market and
understand how the industry disruptors are contributing to this often-misaligned sector of
construction. Reporting back directly to the head office in China, Michael continues to wed
manufacturing capabilities with construction demand through advancement in design,
materials, production and environmental approaches.
