Good Study Habits: A Path to Success

Aristotle said that "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act

but a habit." We can relate this to the real-life situation of students wherein they have dreams

that need to pursue that demands effort in studying. In order for him to reach his goals and

dreams, he must establish good study habits that will help him to achieve excellent academic

performance that will prepare him for his future endeavors. The three most important study

habits are organization, time-management, and most importantly, consistent study sessions.

An organized person has fewer struggles than a person who is not. For example, when I

was in tenth grade, I had a classmate who cleaned his desk every time from corner to corner

and top to bottom. He was the neatest person in the class. Moreover, he was an honor student.

I always wondered how he became an honor student. Whenever the class ends, he was always

the last person to come out of the classroom. It took him about 5-10 minutes to put and arrange

his things in his backpack and check his desk to make sure that none of his things were

missing. Comparing myself to him is like comparing an adult and a kid, just putting away all the

things on the desk and putting it in the bag, as though it did not matter like trash. It is like wiping

out a table full of bread crumbs using your hand. As a result, I always had a hard time looking

for my materials. One day, my classmate let me borrow his notebook because I lost my

notebook in the classroom, the result of poor organization. When I opened his notebook, I was

blown away by his writing and how well he organized his notes, the definitions are on the left

side, and the examples are on the right side of the paper. When I was reading his paper, I

noticed that it was not difficult to read, unlike my notes, it is like a kid’s doodle. As a result, I got

low scores on my quizzes. Also, I noticed that his notebook was filled with colorful Post-it Notes.

I once asked my classmate why he had to write in that way, and why his notebook is full of

Post-it Notes, he said that it makes it easier for him to review, find particular things, and the
Post-it Notes reminds him of what needs to be done. Therefore, being organized saves time,

and it can help you boost your focus on learning. However, a student must also manage his time

wisely.

Lack of time management will result in not being able to accomplish tasks. For example,

when I started studying at Farrington High School, my biggest struggle was to finish all of my

homework. One day, I just got back home from school, (comma splice) it was 2:00 p.m. I went

straight to my room, took out all my homework, and placed it on my table. I had five homework

assignments, and I was confident that I am going to finish all of it before it gets dark. Two hours

had passed, and my homework was not finished yet. I was exhausted, so I decided to take a

rest on the couch, but I ended up playing games and forgetting that I had homework. It was 6:00

p.m., and I did not have much time to finish my homework because I had other tasks to do aside

from my homework, such as cleaning up the table and dishes. The next day, I had nothing to

show any work to my teacher and received a zero score. I asked a friend for help and told him

about my problem working on my assignments. Fortunately, he was able to help me by giving

suggestions such as creating a schedule and setting aside unimportant tasks. I did what my

friend had suggested, and I’ve been able to finish my homework on time. I then realized that

creating a schedule and eliminating distractions not only allows you to accomplish more tasks

but also helps you to concentrate and focus on any tasks. However, without a consistent study

session, students have to work harder for success.

A consistent study session gives advantages to students. For instance, students who

study their lessons daily during their free time and before bedtime will have broader knowledge

because they give more focus on their lessons rather than doing unnecessary activities such as

playing video games and social media. Moreover, it is an opportunity for them to be ahead of

the lessons. As a result, they should get higher grades and good preparation for their future
exams. Also, it makes it easier for them to cope up with the class session as well as

participating in class discussions and being able to share additional knowledge. Furthermore,

they become more confident. From my experience, in a science fair, I was able to answer the

questions of the judges without being nervous. It also allowed me to be more organized and

responsible for doing tasks. The students will be able to reach their goal by having a consistent

study session.

Given these points, study habits are important for every student. Without these habits,

the chances of the student becoming successful are low. There are many kinds of study habits

that students can choose. But, students should only consider the most important ones when

establishing study habits. First, a good organization gives the students the ability to manage and

achieve their goals. Second, having control of time allows students to accomplish more tasks

and stay focused. Lastly, a consistent study allows students to stay on track and gives student

advantages. These are not only important but also the most effective study habits that can

increase a student’s chances of success.
