Unit Topic Overview

1 Data, information, Information Technology (IT) is the application of technology to process
knowledge and information. The impact of IT on all aspects of everyday life is immense.

2 Hardware and Many hardware components and software applications are used in IT
software systems. It is important to understand how these works, and how they
interact with each other and within our environment.
3 Monitoring and identify a range of sensors and describe their use in monitoring
control technologies
4 E-safety and describe how personal data can be gathered by unauthorized persons
health and safety (including: by smishing, vishing, phishing and pharming), and how this
might be prevented
5 The digital divide understand that the digital divide refers to the gap between people
and regions that have access to aspects of modern technology

6 Using networks discuss the advantages and disadvantages of networking computers
7 Expert systems explain how the components of an expert system produce possible
solutions.
8 Spreadsheets Create a spreadsheet. Spreadsheets are used to manipulate numbers,
perform calculations, present summary data and make predictions
9 Database and file A database is a structured method for storing data in sets of tables.

10 Sound and video Students will know how to edit a video and sound clip in various ways to

2. Examinations – Year 12 Paper 1 and 2

1 Paper 1 Theory: 1 hour 45 minutes 50%
This written paper tests sections 1–10 of the syllabus content. Candidates answer
each question in the spaces provided on the question paper. All questions are
compulsory. 90 marks
2 Paper 2 Practical: 2 hours 30 minutes 50%
This paper tests sections 8–10 of the syllabus content. Candidates will also need to
use their previous knowledge from sections 1–7. All tasks are compulsory.
Candidates must use the most appropriate software and the most appropriate
methods. 110 marks
