1. Choose the correct options to complete these sentenses about education

2. Work in pairs. Discuss these question about education in your country.

1 Does education in your country focus more on practical skills or on academic
knowledge? Is there a lot of learning by heart?

Although at present more and more practical schools come out, the truth is the
education in Peru focuses more on memorist practices, trying to store as much
information, but only theoretical, to put it on an examination and be evaluated about it
although at the end of this all the knowledge is lost for not having learned it well.

2 How much emphasis is given to marks and exams? Is this a good or bad thing?
In Peru there is a lot of emphasis on grades and exams, there at the university are
regular (every two weeks) and the grades very much define the success you supposedly
have in studies and is taken into account to apply for some scholarship or work, is a
good thing to some extent, the problem is that not all professors qualify under the same
way.

3 Is there a big problem of non-attendance at school? What about people dropping out
completely?

In the cities there is no great problem of absence of students, but in the deeper areas of
Peru they are not so careful about education and that's why there is also a high rate of
illiteracy there. Most leave completely because they enter to work at once and no longer
have time to continue studying and although there are programs in Peru to avoid this,
sadly they are not put into practice.
3. Read the article about the Lumiar School in Brazil. What are the main
ways in which it is different from a traditional school?
They don’t have (conventional) classrooms. (Pupils occupy ‘spaces’ rather than rooms
and learning takes place ‘everywhere’: in play areas, the hall, the dining room.)
Students can move between different lessons when they want. (If a pupil does not feel
engaged in a lesson, they can go to another one or to the library to read.) Students learn
through projects which they have created, rather than teachers just telling students
about things. (Most learning is done through projects which pupils design with their
fellow students and teachers.)
