What is transcendence?
Transcendence refers to the very highest and most
inclusive or holistic levels of human consciousness,
behaving and relating, as ends rather than means, to
oneself, to significant others, to human beings in general,
to other species, to nature, and to the cosmos.

In philosophy, transcendence is the basic ground concept

from the word's literal meaning (from Latin), of climbing
or going beyond, albeit with varying connotations in its
different historical and cultural stages. It includes
philosophies, systems, and approaches that describe the
fundamental structures of being, not as an ontology
(theory of being), but as the framework of emergence
and validation of knowledge of being.

Limitations & Possibilities

Limitations and Possibilities for Transcendence (Triumphant
Existence) that this World Offers as Human Beings
As human beings, we are limited by our bodies to achieve
transcendence. We are souls trapped inside mortal sacks,
preventing us from reaching phenomenal heights to gain more
understanding of the world around us. We are an embodied spirit
that wanders through this world with a purpose from the beyond.
Transcendence denies that God is contained within the world, and
thus within the limits of human reason, or within the norms and
resources of human society and culture. We are being limited by
our sense perceptions of sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch
given since birth. To achieve transcendence in this sense would be
to die, as our soul will ascend somewhere humans can only imagine
where.
However, even in this state, we can achieve a form of transcendence. It is only a matter of
accessibility, for humans live different lives. Some achieve transcendence through spiritual
enlightenment: religion, believing that there is a higher being that guides and governs us.
Others achieve it through self-transcendence: contributing art, painting masterpieces, and
creating music, putting their thought and creativity into something that transcends the
physical state. This means that to be able to achieve transcendence, one must step out of
their comfort zone and try new things that may help improve their person.

Limitations and Possibilities for Transcendence (Triumphant

Existence) that our Environment Offers as Students of this
Generation
As a student of this generation, in a
religious sense, transcendence is limited in that it is
spiritual. With the number of agnostic or atheistic people growing in modern times, the
concept of religious transcendence has become restricted to those who believe in a
higher power and/or focus or believe on their spiritual side.
In the philosophical sense, with the hyper-competitive world that we live in, with stakes
that are only getting increasingly higher, less and less people get the opportunity to
become successful. As such, transcendence becomes exclusive to those who are able to
fulfill the entirety of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, especially Self-Actualization and Esteem.
This does not mean that the less-fortunate cannot achieve transcendence, but it does
lower their chances. To add onto this point, the high-stakes world demands more and more
white-collared (office) jobs or jobs that are more geared to the nurturing of society rather
than the humans. As such, there are less and less people who achieve self-actualization,
preventing progress in personal development.

An intellectual transcendence on the other hand, while more plausible, remains limited by
opportunities in this material, capitalistic world. To children’s opportunities for studying, to full-
grown adults being limited by money in their pursuit of knowledge, the desire to learn is not
enough to uncover the secrets of the universe.
