The work done on the gas, w = Force × distance

= mg × d

= (0.1×9.8×0.2) J

= 0.196 J

Again, heat produced in the resistor r due to ow of current I for a time t, Q = I^2Rt = [(0.1)^2 × 10 ×2] J

= 0.2 J

From rst law of thermodynamics,

Q= W+ U => U= Q- W

Thus, change in internal energy, U = (0.2 - 0.196) J

= 0.004 J
= 4 × 10^-3 J

Q: A system consists of a gas inside a cylinder as shown in Fig. 1.3. Inside the cylinder there is a 10 resistor connected to
an electrical circuit through which a current can pass. A mass of 0.1 kg is placed on the piston which drops by 0.2 m
and comes to rest. A current of 0.1 A is passed through the 10 resistor for 2s. What is the change in the internal
energy of the system when it...
