Topic: SINGLE AND DOUBL ELIMINATION (Types of Tournament)

Objectives:
● Understand the systematic structure of Tournaments
● Learn how to do the Single and Double Elimination diagram.

Read and Ponder:

The second Basic Diagram for system of tournament is SINGLE ELIMINATION.

A team has to be defeated once in order to be eliminated.
Formula:
N= n-1 N=No. of Games n=No. of Entries

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

a. Less money, time and effort
b. Champion may not be the best team
c. Cruel system

PROCEDURE

a. Look for the power of two

b. Determining the bye by subtracting the number of entries from the powers of two
higher than the number of entries. If the number of teams is the same as the
powers of two, no bye will appear.
c. Divide the power of two to determine the number of rectangles.

Example: 5 teams
N= 5-1
N= 4 games
Bye= 8 (powers of 2) – 5 (number of teams)
= 3 byes
6 teams
N= 6-1
N= 5 games
Bye= 8 (powers of 2) – 6 (number of teams)
= 2 byes

7 teams
N= 7-1
N= 6 games
Bye= 8 (powers of 2) – 7 (number of teams)
= 1 bye
DOUBLE ELIMINATION
A team has to be beaten twice in order to be eliminated.

Formula:
N= 2(n-1 ) N=No. of Games n=No. of Entries

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

a. The champion is the best team
b. Easy to select thee good players
c. All the rest are moderate.

PROCEDURE

a. Know the powers of two (4, 8 and 16…)

b. Determine the bye by subtracting the number of teams from the powers of two,
same as in Single elimination.
c. Divide the powers of two to get the number of rectangles.
d. In double elimination, a play-off may be used if the team from the loser bracket
wins over the waiting of the winner’s bracket.

Example:
5 teams
N= 2(5-1)
N=2x4
N= 8 games

Bye= 8 (powers of 2) – 5
(number of teams)
= 3 byes

6 teams
N= 2(6-1)
N=2x5
N= 10 games

Bye= 8 (powers of 2) – 6
(number of teams)
= 2 byes
8 teams
N= 2(8-1)
N=2x7
N= 14 games

Bye= 8 (powers of 2) – 8 (number of teams)

= 0 bye

Legend:

W – Winner
L - Loser
