PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the introduction, review of related

literature, statement of problem, significance of the study,

scope and limitation and definition of terms.

Introduction

For some students transistioning from high school to

post- secondary can be difficult and stressful. It seems

unnatural for young people to know what they want for their

future. When they are 15, 16,18 years or less of life

experiences draw upon. While others are able to leave high

school with the requisite skills to achieve their desired

level of success, others lack the academic, social, and

financial resources to realize their dreams. Either way,

successfully charting a prosperous life- long career path of a

JHS completer could be a daunting experience.

Preparing high school students for both college and

career is a goal that few can disagree with. But while much

attention has focused on how to prepare students academically.

For life after high school, less has been directed at the

nonacademic skills and knowledge that students need to succeed

in college and work place.

Comprehensive, developmental guidance and counseling

programs are vital to the achievement at excellent in

education for all students. The purpose of career guidance

program modules is to help students develop basic life skills

in the areas of personal, social, career planning, and

academic development, (Pitan,2016) Career guidance is the

process of helping individuals to select a course of study

that may help them get into a job or make them employable

after college. Pitan (2016) noted that this program focuses on

career exploration, career change and career development among

others. Horby et.al (2003) suggest that guidance of students

includes helping learners either individually or in groups to

make personal, educational or vocational choices. Allen and

Robbins (2010) noted that, organized efforts from students and

parents teachers and counselors create life exploration

opportunity that engage young people in meaningful experience.

Marc (2010)point out that these organized efforts provide

completers with the necessary mind set to begin formulating

life-long professionals and personal dreams.

The resources as students and also products of CGPs

(Career Guidance Program) have experienced changes in their

lives because of CGP that was being offered by the government

together with the Department of Education. This CGP helps them

to become certain and specific in their chosen career fields.

Along with this live, this study was conducted to analyze

and determine whether Career Guidance Program is effective and

fruitful to the JHS Completers of SY 2017-2018 and how it

helps them in choosing their strands in tracks in Senior High

School as stepping stone in preparing for their college

endeavors and even in future employment.

REVIEW OF RELATTED LITERATURE

One of the serious problems that our country is facing

right now is the unemployment rate as well as job mismatch of

many Filipinos. And to eradicate or minimize this said issue,

government together with the DepEd implemented and offered

Career Guidance Program to the JHS and SHS students as a tool

in harnessing their life skills and to make them he ready to

meet for demands of the economy. It’s because (Pitan,2015) the

world of employment is always on its changing process, from

industrial age up to the trend now which is information and

communication age, often offered as knowledge-based economy.

Pitan (2016) stated that Career Guidance Program was

found to be or to have the strongest relationships with all

other components of achieving the desire goals in the career-

choosing fields. It implies that CGP plays a vital role in

line with the components of achieving the desired career

goals. Career Guidance Programs enables students to utilize

and develop their skills and knowledge gained in the process

of being a student.
OECD (2003) points that Career Guidance Program

assist students to understand the labor market, and to reflect

on their interests, ambitions, abilities and qualifications.

As what Dacre Pool and Sewell (2017) stated, students need

Career Guidance Program counseling after they have acquired

knowledge, understanding and skills in School to best

determine their achievements to potential employers or even

helps them to pick the course in college and vocational

technologies that’s best suited to what they are desiring.

Effectiveness of Career Guidance Programs to The JHS

Completers

Much has been said that Career Guidance Program has been

a big help to those students who are having hard times

thinking about what Career paths are they going to take offer

completing schooling as what Pitan (2017) has been expounded.

It is important for computers to be guided to overcome

uncertainties in choosing their careers.

After completing JHS students are gonna he facing

difficulties in the unpredictable and highly competitive short

of environment (Ariffin and Saedahtinnur,2012), there is a

need for these completers to gain knowledge on the best way to

know what are demands of the economy, to identify what

opportunities that are waiting for them after college, they

will learn how to package themselves well, and how to make

their career decisions (Pitan, 2016 b.)

Career Guidance Program helps facilitate the

development of the student self-awareness, opportunity

awareness, decisions learning and transition learning

(Learning and Walts, 2003).

Synthesis. The reviewed literature and studies have

established connections with present study as these materials

discussed the need, importance, goals, relevance and

effectiveness of Career Guidance Program to the JHS Completers

(Pitan Law and Watts, Ariffin and Saedahtinnur, Pacre Pool and

Sewell, Allen and Rubbics, Aorby). The reviewed literature

also identified a great effectiveness in undergoing Career

Guidance counseling and joining CGP. The cited materials also

elaborated some concepts regarding the need to have Career

Guidance Programs and cancelling. Differences, however can be

noted from the fact most of the reviewed materials are not the

foreign source which culture and setting are different from

what is the culture and styles in the Philippine setting.
