Suggestions for use:
• Students could be assigned to watch the Super Bowl live and complete the analysis for one of the ads of their choice. It could be a grade or extra credit.
• Students could be assigned one commercial and placed in groups to work together in class.
• Use it before the Super Bowl or the week after; it fits in any time!
• See my Propaganda & Logical Fallacies Teaching Pack or my Persuasive Appeals Teaching Pack to cover the terms.
• You can use the review sheet in this pack as a quick lecture or print it out for students to have with them during the activity!
Prepare:
• Use the cards with QR codes included here for the ads I use and do a interactive, technology gallery walk or place them stations and have students rotate through.
• Another idea is to link your favorite commercials into Google classroom and have groups analyze them.
• See my blog post with all the suggested ads in one place with my analysis and answers for my top five favorite Super Bowl commercials of all time and some suggested
teaching notes.
Extension Ideas:
• Students write – or video - their own commercials using the various appeals.
• Students write a letter to their favorite commercial's producer explaining why they enjoyed it. For an added challenge, require them to use one of the vocabulary terms from
the worksheet.
• Students write a brief paragraph explaining which commercial was their favorite and why.

About Me

I taught English and journalism for 20 years. I have experience at the middle school, high school, and college level. Rural and suburban. Regular, honors,
and inclusion. I am also active in my church working with children and youth of all ages. I have worked as a CCSS ELA training specialist. I have a M.A. in
English and an Ed.S. in Instructional Leadership. I’ve been a Common Core Coach for the state of TN, and have presented at numerous conferences,
workshops, and trainings on various best teaching practices. Additionally, I have several articles published in national teaching journals. To me,
teaching is about leading students to see, make, and appreciate real-world connections. The world around them is full of opportunity, and I want them
to notice that and seize it. I want them not to just swallow information, but rather truly dissect and digest it to make informed decisions and choices.
My teaching style and resources are engaging, student-centered, collaborative, hands-on, critical-thinking inducing, fun, innovative, and standards-
driven.
