Cactus Seed
IIL. Result of the Expedi
of Friedrich Ritter through Sou
America
Since Christmas 1952 Friedrich Ritter is ex

way, acrophine he explores tracts of land where -
partly — no botanist has set foot before, For the
greater part, however, he travels on foot, for it is
possible for a motor vehicle, an Indian or a dog,
to follow him iu his dangerous climbs in the
ons of the Cordilleras.
Friedrich Ritter overlooks now such an enormous
plant material, spread ever a space which em-
hraces continents, that [ know of no other collec
tor or scien larly extensive know-

cis familiar with the eaeti in the deserts of Peru
and Chile, where the scorching sun compels them
to resist dessication to the utmost, by thickening
their coating of spines and by withdrawing into
the soil. — He searches for th the luxuriant
virgin forests along the river Amazon, where
climbing Cerei and Rhipsalis seek a last refuge
by sealing the forest giants in an endeavour to
find here the light.
fc knows them right from the rocky cliffs along
the Pucifie coast up to the regions of eternal
snow of the High Andes, where the alpine spo-

finds a beautiful plant, the seed perhaps wont
ho ripe until several weeks later. If he makes
the irksome journey a second time, often the
ts have already carried away all the seed.
But, apart from disappointments, there are
experiences for the lonely traveller most seldom
with hy people to-day.
nits. instance“After hours of most arduous climbing I arrived
in the innermost part of the ravine before dark-
ness set in, Here there was no longer any path
and no human habitation. I spent the night on
the bare river gravel, after I first had an evening
meal in the pale light of the moon,
This region, the cafion of the Consata river,
a real torrent, is very dry and, apart from the
luxuriantly-growing cacti, there is very little
vegetation. As far as the eye can reach, nothing
betrays the presence of the lord and devastator
of the earth. All day long I wandered, deeply
absorbed in the
Virginity and Majesty of sublime nature.
More than 40 hours of wandering, with nights
spent in the open, without seeing a human
being, or a domestic animal, or traces of their
existence, without sighting a cultivated field or
a stretch of land where the beauty of its vege-
tation was spoilt either by eutting wood, by fire
or by grazing cattle
Here and there the caiion widens and there are
plains of the most fertile loamy soil, which, if
they were irrigated from the river, could be
transformed xuriant cultivated land. Tt
has not ha - T felt happy about it!”
All species will carry the original field number
of Fr. Ritter until the botanical names are
established.
The altitudes quoted are intended to assist cul-
tivation, Yearly average temperature in Bolivia
at 4000 m (13°30 ft.) altitude is 7? Centigrade
(45° F.
Tt is well-known that most South-American
cacti adapt themselves easily to our climatic
conditions.
Friends of cacti and Botanical Gardens are
herewith offered a unique opportunity to enrich
their collections by hotanical treasures.
We sincerely wish them the greatest. possible
success!

TIL.
2
a ect égard.

depuis 25'ans: “Je Pai cherché pendant long-
