L'action (1893)
Blondel submitted his doctoral thesis to the Sorbonne after
several years’ work and numerous drafts with the final title:
‘L'Action: Essai d'une critique de la vie et d'une science de la
pratique’. It is a multi‐levelled, complex philosophical (p.67)

The Fourth Part deals with this conflict and, in doing so, raises
the question of the relationship that subsists between the
natural and the supernatural order. The dilemma places us
before the alternative for or against what Blondel designates
as l’unique nécessaire (the one thing necessary)—in allusion,
perhaps, to Lk. 11.41–2 and Pascal's Pensées.8 This is the
genesis point of the supernatural order in the natural. He
writes (the much quoted):

Indeed, this is the task he would set himself for much of his
later career. Nothing that he would write later, however, could
live up to the juvenile energy, to the intensity of argument,
and to the structural elegance of this seminal work. And for all
its deficiencies, it still remains the text in which to access
Blondel's philosophy, and nothing that he subsequently writes
can be adequately approached without having understood first
its connection to the seminal argument of L'Action.

Maurice Blondel and Ressourcement
In this way, Blondel was the one to have exposed the dangers
and aberrations of the integrist mentality within Catholicism
with its deficient philosophical and indeed, theological,
foundations. Balthasar would later point to ‘the interest and
importance of these “controversies” with a view to a
philosophical and theological analysis of Catholic integrism’.41
And one of the leading periti at the Second Vatican Council,
Yves Congar, has remarked that ‘if it were necessary for us to
characterize in one word the theological approach of the
Council, we would evoke the ideal of knowledge proposed by
Maurice Blondel, which protested against what he rather
enigmatically called “monophorism”, that is to say a reified
(chosiste) conception of knowledge’.42
Later Years
Because of deterioration in his eyesight, Blondel took early
retirement from teaching at the university of Aix‐en‐Provence
and dedicated the remainder of his life to drafting the
definitive form of his integral philosophy. From 1934–7 he
dictated (to his secretary, Mlle Panis) and published five
volumes of a ‘trilogy’: two volumes on Thought, two volumes
on Action, and a fifth volume (p.81) on Being and beings. Two
further volumes appeared between 1944 and 1946 on
Philosophy and the Christian Spirit; the third, planned volume
remained outstanding at his death in 1949.

(35) One could add to this list his short work from 1939, Lutte
pour la civilisation et philosophie de la paix (Paris:
Flammarion, 1939).
(39) I use the translation ‘integrist’ rather than the more usual
‘integralist’ to translate the French ‘intégriste’, not only
because as its homologue it is closer to the original French
(itself a neologism adapted from the Spanish), but, more
particularly in the case of Blondel, I wish—in order to avoid
confusion—to reserve the word ‘integral’ (and its variants) for
a separate setting, since one of Blondel's explicit concerns is
to formulate what he terms an ‘integral realism’. See Yvette
Périco, Maurice Blondel: Genèse du sens (Paris: Editions
Universitaires, 1991), 23–5.
