LO 1) Calculate a load duration curve from given data relating to a supply

Situation
P1) Calculate and draw typical load and load duration curves from given data
relating to a supply situation.
We can calculate the load factor by using this formula
Load factor = Avg Load value / Peak Load Value
Avg Load value = 79.58 MW
Peak Load value = 100W
Load factor = 79.58W / 100 W
Load factor = 0.7958
We can calculate the total capacity of plant by using this formula
Total Capacity of Plant = Total Power generated in specified duration
Total Capacity of Plant = Avg Load value
Total Capacity of Plant = 79.58 MW
Capacity factor of Plant = load factor
Capacity factor of Plant = 0.7958
M1: Illustrate changes in load, over time, for varying supply situations.
If the load factor is high it means that the power plant is running at good position by
supplying power with little variations. The variations in this scenario is quite high but
its capacity factor is quite good. We prefer lower fluctuations in power generations,
and we can achieve the lower fluctuations in the wind power plant. That’s the basic
reason of our selection of wind power plant [ CITATION Jun20 \l 1033 ].
D1: Define a strategy for alternative power generation, based on optimal load
duration.
We can use wind power for our power generation as an alternate method because it
has highest efficiency and cost is reasonable and it generates power throughout the
year and its average load condition is more optimal then above load curve.
Therefore, its more preferable to use wind energy for power generation.
P2: Analyze a given energy generation system in order to define an installation
strategy.
The given energy system is basically a solar energy system which consist of solar
collectors. This energy system provides both electric and heat energy. We cannot
prefer this energy source because it’s not economical. The installation cost of this
plant is high.
LO 2) Evaluate the principles that underpin the design and installation of
alternative methods of power generation and distribution.
P3: Discuss the Installation requirements of a given alternative energy
generation system
Nuclear Power Plants
A large amount of energy is generated by the nuclear power plant. The energy
generated from this source is low carbon energy, and so we can call it environment
friendly. A nuclear power plant only requires a low quantity of fuel, and it produces a
large amount of power. So, we can call it energy efficient. Its installation is also easy.
But its fault is that it's hard to handle it. And the power that is generated from this
source is also considered as reliable[ CITATION Bre17 \l 1033 ].
Solar power plants
Solar Power plants basically convert energy from the sun into either electrical energy
or thermal energy using the cleanest and renewable energy sources. This type of
power plant does not require any kind of handling or high maintenance. And we can
utilize it for about 25 years. But the thing is that the initial cost for this type of plant is
high, and it requires a lot of space as well. Installing equipment requires solar cells
and generators on a larger scale. This produces heat and through it produces the
stream, and then this stream runs the turbine and then electricity is produced
[ CITATION SCB14 \l 1033 ].

Wind power plants

This type of power plant produces energy from the wind as we know that our location
is on the waterside; therefore, we can say that this type of power plant is more
preferable because the wind is high on the waterside and most wind farms are also
on the waterside. We can set the wind farms on agricultural land without consuming
any extra land, and it generates renewable energy at a low cost. But its expenditure
is high, and sometimes its maintenance costs us high, and its setup requires only the
wind turbines and generator that is connected to them. But related to other power
plants, it is cost-effective because its operational cost is so low, and it is also
environmentally friendly because it has no harmful effect on the
environment[ CITATION Maj20 \l 1033 ].
Tidal Power Plant
This type of power plant basically converts the energy generated from tides into our
desirable form of energy. This type of energy is preferable to the other power plants
because our desired location is on the waterside. This source has the potential to
grow in our future. Because its setup cost is also not so high as compared to others
and it occupies the water area which is already not in our use, and we haven’t to
worry about the land for this type of power plant, but its operation is costly. We have
to put turbines in water that rotate with the force of tides, and sometimes we
generate tides manually, and then the turbine rotates and produces
energy[ CITATION Maj20 \l 1033 ].

M2: Compare different systems of power generation in order to select a

suitable system
Suitable Energy Source
We prefer the Wind Power Plant in this location because of its broader aspects,
and it is environment-friendly and cost-effective as well. Its operational cost is low,
and its maintenance cost is also bearable [ CITATION Moj17 \l 1033 ].
