CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

United Kingdom Annual Literacy has an annual survey about reading and writing

enjoyment, attitudes, and behaviors year-on-year since 2010. According to their recent survey in

2019, teenagers from age 14 to 18 years old less likely to enjoy the book rather than children

around 5 to 13 years old. Survey also reported that only 20% of a teenager read the book daily.

That means teenagers nowadays show a negative attitude towards reading books. A negative

attitude towards reading books can illustrate as teenagers do not read a lot outside their classes or

in their free time.

Based on the survey, teenagers do not read a book a lot. There are several reasons why

they do not read a book. Some say reading a book needs a lot of effort and time. Meanwhile,

being teenagers is quite busy that you do not have time fully commitment to read a book. When

they become a teenager, they will get busy on their own activities like studying and seeing

friends. Some say that reading a book is not cool and judge as being a nerd. Teenagers are scared

that they are being judged because of their reading choice. Some say they are not being pushed to

read like they used to be in primary school. To illustrate, a mother would give their son a present

if he finished reading a book. After the son growing up, a mother will not do that again. Hence,

the son loses his motivation to read.

Fact that teenagers do not read many books is a great loss. Teenagers are an age at which

they are supposed to enrich their knowledge as much as possible. Reading book improves their

vocabulary. It will help them to communicate effectively. By communicating effectively, they

can express their feeling and think more accurately. Reading books provokes their brain. Their
brains demand to process images and speech which will boost their learning and memory

capacity. Reading book develops their analytical thinking skill. As reading book make you see

other points of view, ask a question, and make a connection, they enable making freshly ideas or

thought about certain topics.

Some teenagers are aware of the benefits of reading. Somehow, they are still less

interested to read more books. In this matter, books should get publicized better to reach the

teenage age group. Teenager need help to know what kind of book that will make them

interested. As a result, they will enjoy reading more books and not having a burden by reading it.

Teenager lack of a community which supports them for reading book. Joining a community for

discussing a certain topic of the book makes the reading book less boring since they have

somebody who will hype the book together. Teenagers require a space to enjoy the book better.

They will be more comfortable to enjoy a book if the environment supports them. In short,

assisting teenagers to find a book that attractive for them, forming a group that will encourage

them to discuss the book, creating a comfortable space to enjoy the book are ways to make

millennial teenagers read a book.
