• It also provides the first level of treatment of cholera
and is vital in areas where access to health facilities is
difficult or there are high number of cases.
When should ORS be used? • It io given when the child has three or more loose
stools in a day.
• In addition, for 10-14 days, give children over 6
months of age 20 mg of zinc per day; Children under
6 months are given 10 mg of zinc per day.
Where can ORS be obtained? • ORS is usually available in packets and could be
obtained from pharmacies and health centers.
How is the ORS drink 1. Put the contents of the ORS packet in a clean
prepared? container. Check the packet for directions and add the
correct amount of clean water. Remember that too
little water could make the diarrhea worse.
2. Add water only. Do not add ORS to other liquids like
milk, soup, fruit juice or soft drinks. Do not add
sugar.
3. Stir the mixture well.
4. feed it to the child from a clean cup. Do not use a
bottle.
How much ORS drink to give?

✓ For children under 2 years old:

At least 1/4 to 1/2 of a large (250-millilitre) cup of the
ORS drink after each watery stool.
✓ For children aged 2 years or older:
At least 1/2 to 1 whole large (250-millilitre) cup of
the ORS drink after each watery stool.
What if ORS is not available? ORS made at home:

1. Mix 6 level teaspoons of sugar and ½ level teaspoon

of salt.
2. Make sure that you carefully mix correct amounts.
Too much sugar would worsen the diarrhea, while too
much salt can be extremely harmful to the child.
3. Dissolve both solutes in 1 L of clean water.
