Description of the machine

The excavator is made up of a front chassis section, a rear chassis section, a turntable, a cab and equipment
consisting of four elements.

- Central joint :

A central joint between the two chassis sections enables the machine to turn. Ground contact of the four
wheels is provided by the oscillation of the rear axle.

- Stabilizers :

Two independently-controlled stabilizers combined with the oscillation lock stabilize the machine during ope-
ration.

- Rear chassis :

The rear chassis section is equipped with a turbocharged water-cooled 4 in-line-cylinder diesel engine.
- The engine drives two variable displacement pumps which perform the following functions :
• Travel pump: coupled in a closed circuit with a variable displacement motor, the assembly forming a
hydrostatic transmission,
• Equipment pump: movements of the rams, power-assistance of the controls and associated functions.
- The engine also drives a fixed displacement pump which performs the machine’s steering and turntable’s
slewing movements.

- Transmission :

The transmission is of the permanent 4x4 type, with a limited-slip differential on both axles.

- Turntable :

The turntable is connected to the front chassis section by a slewing crown wheel. The turntable supports the
operator’s cab, the excavator’s equipment and the counterweight.
The slewing internal crown wheel is driven by a hydraulic motor equipped with a negative brake in case of
assistance pressure failure.

- Cab :

The cab is closed and heated. It is “FOPS” and “ROPS” approved (falling objects and roll-over protective
structure).
An electronic control panel groups together the machine’s operating and safety information.

- Controls :

The controls are integrated in consoles situated on either side of the seat.

- Seat :

The seat is sprung, dampened, height-adjustable and adjustable lengthwise.

M1 01.3
12MXT
- Equipment :

The equipment is controlled by manipulators enabling the movements to be combined flexibly and efficiently.
It is in the centre of the machine and made up of four elements : the boom, the intermediate boom, the jib
and the dipper.
The boom is controlled by the parallelogram formed by the boom ram, the braces and the boom connecting
rods. This gives it the advantage of a 140° travel.
The offset jib permits, by the action of a hydraulic ram, the symmetrical offset of the dipper and the tool in
order to dig outside the machine’s boundaries.

- Tool-holder :

At the end of the dipper is the tool-holder permitting the instant changing of the bucket or tool from the cab
without manual intervention. The bucket or tool has mechanical and automatic locking, only their unlocking is
hydraulically controlled.

mum transmission ratio to suit the motion resistance and accelerator setpoint of the turbocharged
diesel engine: it is automobile control.

- Selection of the direction of travel (F) “forward” or (R) “reverse” by electric control on the stee-
ring “Commodo”.

. (L) “site” (between 0 and 6 km/h ).
. (H) “road” (between 0 and 26 km/h).
Possibility of control in “loader mode” (L) or (H) and (F) or (R) using the right manipulator (option).

- Inching control makes it possible to reduce the travel speed at diesel engine’s constant speed
and therefore at a constant power at the wheels, and this in both directions of travel.

B - Equipment circuit :

- “Load Sensing” principle

- Oil cooler

- Power control and variable displacement axial piston pump :

. Max. cubic capacity : .................................................................................................... 63 cm3
. Max. delivery : ............................................................................................................ 140 l/min
. Max. pressure : ............................................................................................................ 280 bar

- Associated functions by solenoid-operated valves :

. Low pressure : .............................................................................................................. ~ 35 bar
- Accelérator,
- Oscillation lock,

2 - Hydraulic system, continued :

C - Equipment circuit :

- Combined SX 18 “LUDV” valve block :

. Four elements (standard version) or five elements (option) of proportional load sensing func-
tion with individual balancing for each element: boom, intermediate boom, dipper, bucket and
auxiliary (option).
. One input element.
. One open-centre element for slewing with separate SM12 type supply.
. Proportionality of the functions always complied with irrespective of each element’s pressure
level.
. Anti-cavitation pressure relief valve on each element.
. Hydraulicall-assisted proportional function controls, by manipulators or foot-operated controls
supplied at low pressure with stand-by accumulator.

D - Slewing and hydrostatic steering circuit :

- Hydrostatic steering :
. Double-acting ram controlled by a 175 bar ORBITROL unit and a priority valve operated by
‘’load-SENSING’’ signal and protected by two 240 bar anti-shock valves.
. Fixed displacement gear pump : ....................................................................................19 cm3
(The flow passes through a priority valve which selects steering or slewing).
. Max. delivery : .......................................................................................................... ~ 43 l/min
. Max. pressure : ............................................................................................................ 175 bar

- Slewing :
. Hydraulic motor with brake :
- Max. pressure : ........................................................................................................ 230 bar
- Cubic capacity : ...................................................................................................... 750 cm3
. Slewing internal (ball) crown wheel with remote greasing,
. Rotation speed : .............................................................................................................. 8 rpm

- Dampened CROSS-OVER valve for setting in motion and gradual stopping of the rotating turn-
table.

E - Braking:

- Hand brake (parking and emergency) :

. Spring brake working by lack of pressure on the integrated discs on the front axle.

- Hydrostatic foot brake (foot-operated control with INCHING device, main brake function and
working brake function) :
. Main brake : In the initial part of its travel, it reduces the machine’s travel speed by means of
the valve (INCHING function), then if the braking pressure exceeds 13 bar it acts simulta-
neously on the integrated discs on the front and rear axles (main brake function). This system
increases the service life of the brake discs,
. Working brake : A switch locks the foot-operated control in the braked position and makes it
possible to work by releasing the brake pedal while at the same time having the brakes lo-
cked.

F - Hydraulic filtration:

- on return circuit for the equipment (10 µ),

- on booster pump circuit for travel (10 µ).

16 - Transporting the machine (continued) :

C - Towing :

- Disconnection of the hydrostatic travel :

. Undo by 2 or 3 turns the two bypass valves (4/1) situated on the traval pump using a 32 mm open-
ended spanner,
. To close again, tighten the bypass valves using a 32 mm open-ended spanner, applying a tighte-
ning torque of 30 ± 6 Nm.

- Towing of the machine in the event of an engine or hydraulic pump breakdown :

1 . If the accumulator pressure is sufficient, release the parking brake and then remove the link pin
(6/1) between the ram and the connecting rod on the front axle to release the disc brakes,

2 . If the power-assistance pressure is insufficient to release the brake (red warning light 5/1
on), it is necessary to compress the ram mechanically and to remove the link pin (6/1).

- Towing of the machine in the event of failure of the power-assistance pressure if the turntable
is incorrectly oriented.

The slewing motor is equipped with a negative brake which locks the turntable in the event of a
power-assistance pressure fault (red warning light 5/1 on).
In this case, if the machine needs to be towed and if the turntable is incorrectly oriented, it is
necessary to release the motor brake. To do this, use an ordinary hand pump.
. Release the brake with a pressure of 30 bar ± 2.

Brake release of the hydraulic turntable slewing motor :

. Disconnect the supply to the brake (7/1) and make sure that it is filled with oil.
. Connect the hand pump.
. Operate the pump until the pressure gauge reads 30 bar.
. Align the turntable and lock it mechanically (1/5).
. Tow the machine.
. Cause the pressure to drop using the pump’s valve.
. Disconnect the pump.
. Reconnect the supply to the brake.

On sloping ground, brake release may well cause the turntable to rotate in an
untimely manner. Lower the equipment to the ground before doing any
manoeuvre.

Towing must be done at a very low speed (max. 2 km/h) and only to clear the
road and to get it on or off the transporter (risk of damage to the hydraulic
components if the speed and distance are too great).

Maintenance

1 - Welding on the machine :

During arc welding on the machine or on the equipment fitted on the machine, components such as bea-
rings and electrical units can be damaged if the earth wire is not connected correctly. In order to elimina-
te these risks, the following measures must be taken before starting welding :

- Cut off the power supply from the cut-out.

- Connect the set’s earth as close as possible to the welding point and avoid current passing through a
bearing.

2 - Supply of the cylinders after intervention (diesel effect) :

A "diesel effect" (dieseling) can occur if air is allowed into the hydraulic cylinders during an intervention. This
occurs if a favourable mixture of air and hydraulic oil is compressed when the pistons of the cylinders
approach their stop position, a spontaneous ignition temperature is then reached. Dieseling damages the
piston seals and the piston rings.
The problem can be avoided by bleeding the air from the cylinders after the intervention. To do this, activa-
te the cylinders over their full travel, without subjecting them to a load and do this until the air present in the
circuit has disappeared.
If a cylinder is to be subjected to a pressure test after an intervention, extend and retract the piston rod seve-
ral times before bringing the pressure to the test level.

Hot hydraulic oil and pressurised hydraulic oil can cause serious accidents
to people.

3 - Repairing hydraulic components in the workshop :

- Work on hydraulic components must be carried out in a place separate from where other activities are
carried out and in a "clean" room. This room must have good ventilation and the floor must be covered
with a binding material. Machining, grinding and other similar operations are not authorised in this
room. The workplace must be equipped with carefully cleaned tools and containers appropriate for the
cleaning of hydraulic components.

- The containers used for the cleaning of hydraulic components must be for this use only. The contai-
ners must be cleaned often and the detergent replaced. The containers must have in their bottom a
removable strainer to separate the component from any residues.

- The components which are handled in the "clean" room must be cleaned roughly beforehand. Caustic
soda solutions and similar solutions which attack rust must not be used for this cleaning.

- An intervention on the hydraulic system must always be planned in such a way that it can be comple-
ted without too long an interruption.

- After cleaning during repair, use clean, dry air to dry, and not rags or frayed cloths. Once the compo-
nent is ready, it must be plugged with plastic plugs of the right size, before being packed.

- The room must be cleaned without raising dust and impurities.

- Hands and working clothes must always be clean.

01.24 M1
12MXT
4 - Intervention on the hydraulic system on a site :

If necessary and insofar as is possible, the machine must be moved to a non-dusty environment. A tho-
rough search for the cause of the fault must be carried out to avoid unnecessary interventions.

- Test the various movements, the pressures and the engine speed, and listen (keys and pliers must
not be used). Once the cause has been determined, the defective components must be replaced
because it is necessary to avoid repairing them on site. The components removed, as well as the
connecting points, must be plugged as quickly as possible. Those which are to be replaced must be
put into adequate containers.

- The oil collected in containers provided for waste oil must not be re-used. If the tank has to be drai-
ned, refilling with oil must take place from the cover of the hydraulic oil filter so that the oil goes
through the filter.
For an intervention, gloves and working clothes must always be clean, and shoes carefully cleaned
before climbing onto the machine. After each intervention, tools must be cleaned very carefully.

- All components must be plugged with plastic plugs of the right size, before being packed in plastic
bags.

- Breakdown vehicles must be equipped with a roll of plastic film, ordinary-sized plugs and plastic contai-
ners for components.

- Hydraulic oil must be kept in hermetically-sealed tanks or drums. Containers intended for transporting
hydraulic oil must be for this use only and marked to this effect
.

5 - Connection of battery cables :

Important : When a discharged battery is connected to a charged battery, it may burst as a result of
the sudden arrival of the current generated.
- To reduce this risk, connect the negative pole of the auxiliary battery to the earth point on the chas-
sis.
