Abaqus / Explicit
What Makes a Problem Dynamics?

► When inertial forces are significant ► Dynamic Equilibrium.

and vary rapidly in time.
► Inertial force is a force which opposite

to acceleration direction
 Apply to the behavior of any
► It could be linear or non-linear mechanical system
problems depends on
 When inertial or dynamic fore is small
enough, the equation reduce to static
form

11
Abaqus / Explicit
What is Explicit Dynamics?
► Integrating the equations of motion through time

 Performs a large number of small time increments efficiently

 Combining explicit dynamic integration rule with lumped mass matrix elements
 Uses primarily reduced-integration elements which are computationally
inexpensive
 Capable for large deformations, contact, nonlinear material response

12
Abaqus/Standard vs Abaqus/Explicit
Abaqus/Standard Abaqus/Explicit
Linear and nonlinear High-speed (short duration
static dynamics)
Linear dynamic Large, nonlinear, quasi-static
Low frequency response High discontinuous post-buckling
Nonlinear heat transfer Collapse simulations
Structural-acoustics Extreme deformations
Coupled temperature- Coupled temperature-
displacement (quasi- displacement (dynamic)
static)

13
Advantage of Each Solver
Abaqus/Standard Abaqus/Explicit

Can solve true static equilibrium

Solve high-speed dynamic problem efficiently
𝑷−𝑰=𝟎

Does not require as much disk space as

Provides large number of element types for Abaqus/Standard for large problems
any problems

Contains many capabilities that make it easy

Stable size of time increment to simulate any kind of problems

Very robust and proven contact algorithm Very robust and proven contact algorithm

14
When should we use Abaqus/Explicit?
► It depends on the smoothness of the solution
 If there are significant of discontinuities in the solution, it
maybe not efficient with Abaqus/Standard.

► Common sources of discontinuity:

 Impact
 Buckling or local wrinkling
 Material degradation or failure, e.g. cracks

15
Why should we use Abaqus/Explicit?
► It expands that range of problems you can address
 Wide range of many modeling capabilities. For example
adaptive meshing and coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis.
 Able to simulate larger models more readily

► Easy to learn
 Same input structure as Abaqus/Standard modelling

► Same license as Abaqus/Standard

 Token based license without any additional licenses.

16
Abaqus/Explicit Features Key Points
► General Contact
 Allows you to define contact between many or all
regions of a model with a single interaction
 Usually faster than the contact pair algorithm
 Geared towards models with multiple
components and complex topology

One contact domain in general contact Multiple contact pairs requited

17
Abaqus/Explicit Features Key Points
► Quasi-static with explicit dynamics solver approach

 Increase load rates

• Reduce the time scale of process Model process in the
GOAL shortest time period
 Mass scaling
in which inertial
• Allows us to model process in their forces are still
natural (real) time scale when insignificant
considering strain-sensitivity materials

More efficient than

implicit solver

18
Abaqus/Explicit Features Key Points
► Progressive Damage and Failure
 Damage Initiation (Point A)
 Damage Evolution (Path A-B)
 Choice of element removal (Point B)

Failure Mode Element removal
