IGNITION COILS

Removing-refitting

Proceed as follows to remove the ignition

coils:
- disconnectelectricalconnection;
- unscrew both retaining screwsand remove
the coil by taking out of its housing.

NOTE The coil is fitted with a silicone ex-

tension of high dielectric capacity.
This contains a spring-loaded con-
tact.
Do not take the two components
apart and risk losing or dirtying the
inner contact.
It is unnecessaryto separatethe coil
from the extension when replacing

provided as a single unit.

CHECKING EMISSION LEVELS

The systemcontrols advancesetting, carbon monoxide (CO) leveland idle air flow without the possibil-
ity of adjustment. No manual adjustmentsare therefore necessary.
A check on the exhaustemissionsupstreamand downstreamfrom the catalytic convertercan neverthe-
less provide valuable information on injection-ignition system operation, engine parametersand the
catalytic converter

Checking CO and HC levels upstream of catalytic converter

Proceedas follows to check levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) upstream
of catalytic converter:

1. Unscrew plug on exhaust pipe, upstream of cata)ytic converter, and tighten tool in its place.
2. Connect the probe of a suitably calibrated CO-tester to the tool.
3. Start the engine and allows to warm up.
4. Check rpm is as specified.
5. Check idling CO level is within specified range (see table); otherwise check:
- Lambda probe operation, using a Fiat/Lancia Tester;
- for air leaks in the area around the Lambda probe seat;
- the injection and ignition system (particularly spark plug wear).

6. Under the same conditions, check that HC levels are less than 500 p.p.m,
7. If level is not as specified, tune engine and check the following:
- timing;
- compression.

Summary table of polluting emission tolerances

CO(%) HC (p.p.m, CO2 (%)

Upstream of cat 0.4 - 1 < 500 > 12

Downstream of cat < 0.35 < 90 > 13

Checking CO and HC levels at exhaust

To measure levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburnt hydorcarbons (HC) in exhaust emissions, in-
sert the probe of an appropriately calibrated tester until at least 30 cm inside tail pipe.

1. Check that idling CO and HC levels are as specified (see table). .

2. If HC level is not as specified but level measured upstream of the catalytic converter was correct, It
may be assumed that engine is correctly tuned and the fault lies in catalytic converter inefficiency.

CHECKING ENGINE IDLE SPEED

If idle speed is not as specified, level cannot be adjusted because injection-ignition ECU is self-regulat-
ing. Position of the accelerator linkage must therefore be checked and then the fault detected by means
of full diagnosis using a Fiat/Lancia Tester.

CHECKING IGNITION ADVANCE

Use a F/L Tester to check ignition advance angl~s at different speeds.
