People experience the world differently based on their
identities. We may feel it is rude to formally recognize our identity
and how people might be different from us. However, recognizing
these identities helps us to understand one another’s experiences.
Intersectionality is a framework for understanding how people
are affected by their identities. Some identities carry more or less
social and political power than others. Often times, there are
overlapping identities at play that are affected by multiple sources of
oppression. For instance, a black man and a white woman make
$0.74 and $0.78 to a white man’s dollar, respectively. Black women,
faced with multiple forms of oppression, only make $0.64.
Understanding intersectionality is essential to understanding
experiences of trauma and making sense of one’s thoughts and
emotions.
