manage to keep a table like that up-to-date in less
than an hour a month.

Of course, not every customer you call will

opportunities, this type of chat helps tremendously to
improve the image they have of you. They will tell lots
of people that you are so interested and involved.

“Sure, but why would I do that? I’ve got so much business

already.” The answer is simple: with an existing
customer – one-off or not – you have already won
their trust. That is to say, if you didn’t call him names
when you completed the order because he kept
moaning about some small scratch.

It may seem like a small thing, but that trust is actually

an important factor in the entire sales process. People
base most of their purchases on emotions. Customers
who already know that you deliver a good product for
a fair price, because you have already served them
in this way, will be happy to pay a higher price than
customers who don’t have that confidence in you yet.

Existing customers will not run off to a competitor

that has not yet won their trust just for the sake of a
small price difference. In fact, they will often not even
ask a competitor for a quote if they already feel that
you will serve them well.

If you only focus on quotation requests that are sent

to your info@ address every day, it may seem easier
at first. You will need to put in less effort to start a
potential sales process. But if you look at the bigger
picture, it turns out this is not always easier.

With requests from strangers, you have to make a lot

more effort at a later stage in the process to get the
order. Or, if you’re unlucky, maybe even drop your
price considerably, because one of your competitors
also wants the job and the customer can only
compare you both on price, because he doesn’t know
you both yet.

In short, do more with your existing customer base. It

is bigger than you think. <

On Friday 10 September, Flemish Minister of Economy
Hilde Crevits laid the foundation stone for the new
location. Well, it was called 'laying the foundation stone',
but obviously a gate lock manufacturer isn't going to
let a minister lug stones around: Crevits opened a gate,
which was fitted with the prototype of a new lock. A
marquee was erected on the new 7-hectare site for the
occasion, where all employees could enjoy food and
drink. Founder Joseph Talpe gave a speech in which
called his people his champions, without whom the
steep growth of recent years would not have been
possible. The minister also gave a short speech, in which
she praised Locinox for creating employment in Flanders.

Locinox plans to move the first departments in the

Faac introduces
swing gate motor
on gate post
Rembrandt Happel

FOBS Magazine 124|eu 19
20 FOBS Magazine 124|eu
Faac, an Italian drive manufacturer,
introduced a new type of swing gate motor
this spring. The S2500i is not a spindle or
articulated arm drive, but it is mounted on
top of the gate post.

“I
t’s based on underground drive technology,” says
Paul van Hecke, Managing Director of Faac’s
Belgian and Dutch branches. “Underground
drives have many benefits. The main one is that the
spindles or cylinders stay out of sight. But they also
have a disadvantage: installation and maintenance
are pretty labour-intensive. Our developers wanted to
create a good alternative for that. Their answer: the
S2500i. It is a drive that uses the same technology: it
is mounted not under, but on top of the post.”

Installation
The S2500i is mounted partly onto and partly into
the gate post. “And that’s the second big advantage,”
van Hecke tells us. “Because it is now much easier
to access for maintenance or repairs. And installation
is also easier.” Faac supplies mounting materials
for gate posts of 100 by 100, 120 by 120 or 150
by 150 millimetres. “In theory, the new drive can be
installed on new and existing gates. With existing
gates, this will take a bit of work, however. Not only
do you have to adjust the leaf frame, but pretty
much always the distance from the post as well. This
means that the drive does a lot better if you already
take it into account in the design phase of the gate.
Then you can exactly coordinate the post, drive
and location of the leaf and you get very attractive
results.”

Specifications
The new drive is suitable for leaves of up
to 2.5 metres, with a maximum weight of
250 kilograms. It is a 24-volt motor, with an
absolute encoder. “The encoder knows the exact
location of the leaf at all times,” says van Hecke.
“This results in full motion control and accurate
and sensitive obstacle detection, in accordance
with European regulations.” The S2500i also
has mechanical end stops that can be used to
determine exactly up to where the leaf can swing
in the drive itself. This prevents having to put end
stops in the ground that people could trip over
or break while driving over them.” The maximum
opening angle is 165 degrees, the speed is
maximum 10 degrees per second and the torque is
320 newton metres. The housing can be supplied
in black-grey (RAL 7021), but also in self colour
aluminium, so that it can be coated in the colour of
the gate.

FOBS Magazine 124|eu 21

Options
The housing of the new S2500i can also
be supplied without a motor. In that case,
only the hinge is supplied. “In this way, it is
possible to automate the gate at a later stage,”
says van Hecke. “In this case, you can easily
install the drive in the housing later on. There
is also a battery pack available for the new
drive, to provide emergency power in the event
of a power failure, and which can be mounted
under the drive in the pole. Of course, this is
in addition to all other options and extensions,
such as hand-held transmitters, intercoms, exit
loops etcetera.”

Simply Connect
The control of this new drive is suitable for
Simply Connect, Faac’s cloud solution that
allows users and owners to control and
manage their gates via an app. They can
do this with an open and close button on
the screen, but also with a voice assistant
or using geolocation. The gate will then
open as soon as you approach it with your
phone. Simply Connect is also very useful
for installers: they can use it to remotely
monitor the status of the gate, and manage
and program the control system. “This is
Giuseppe Manini’s
particularly useful for customers who have a first drive
maintenance contract,” says van Hecke. “If
the customer calls about a malfunction, you
can immediately see what’s going on and
which error message the control is putting
out. If it is something simple, like a blocked
photocell, you can immediately tell the
customer to take a waste container out of the
passageway, for example, or to wipe the snow
off the glass.”

Underground
“Our founder, Giuseppe Manini, invented the
first electrically powered gate opener in 1965,”
van Hecke finishes, with a bit of history.
“He had noticed that the gates of buildings
were always open. Everyone would get out
of their car to open them, but no one could
be bothered to close the gate behind them
after driving through. That first drive was an
underground model: the 750. It was only later
that the superstructure drives with spindles,
cylinders and folding arms made their entrance.
It’s funny, because even though more than
55 years have passed in the meantime, today
we are still the first to introduce an inverted
model of that type of drive on the market.” <

The German gate manufacturer Norport

celebrated its 10th anniversary this summer. The
company, a specialist in aluminium swing gates
with built-in drives, was founded in August 2011
in Tönning, a town by the North Sea, halfway
between Hamburg and the Danish border.

N
orport was based on an idea of the late
Hans-Friedrich Eller, founder of drive and
barrier manufacturer Elka, and his cousin
Torben Nehls-Eller. “We were just sitting around
philosophising about the future over a beer,” says the
latter. “We wondered if we could maybe develop a drive
that is mounted in the gate posts of the swing gate. This
method offers many additional benefits. But although it
was technically perfectly possible, we soon realised that the
post, the leaf and the drive needed to be coordinated down
to every last detail. As a result, an internal drive was less
suitable for the Elka program, which, in addition to barriers,
mainly consists of drives you can use to automate manual
gates from third parties.”

Norport
“Nevertheless, we thought the idea was too good to simply
pass up,” Nehls-Eller continues. “And so we moved on to
the next question: why don’t we build the matching gate
ourselves? All sorts of ideas popped up spontaneously,
about what these gates should look like and how we would
approach the project. We immediately consulted with the
engineers in the development department the next day, to
see if they liked the idea. They were also very keen. And
so we set up a separate company to this end. One of our
colleagues, who is very gifted at woodworking, started
making wooden demo models. We bought a plot of land
elsewhere in the village and had a hall built there. We came
up with a name for the new company: ‘Nor’ because we
come from the North of Germany, and ‘port’ means gate, in
our North Frisian dialect.”

26 FOBS Magazine 124|eu

In Norport’s Autoport, the drive
is located in the gate posts. The
engine is at the bottom and
the controls are at the top.

Autoport
Norport marketed the first swing gates under the
name Autoport. Apart from the built-in drives,
another feature is that the hinge posts are bevelled
at one corner. “Since we started from scratch, we
were able to coordinate all the parts perfectly,”
says Christian Petersen, who has been with the
business since 2016 and has been looking after
the day-to-day operations ever since. “For example,
thanks to the slanted angle, special hinges and clever
positioning of the leaf, we can make sure that it is
almost impossible to get your fingers caught between
the leaf and the post. We even got a patent for it. The
leaves are also secured against lifting, for example.
And we made sure that the filling is nicely positioned
in the middle of the frame, so that the leaves look the
same on the inside and outside.”

Secure
“When we finished the first model, we had it tested
by the TÜV for wind load and closing force,” explains
Petersen. “That involved a lot of work, but we wanted
to enter the market with a safe gate that complied
with all the standards and regulations. Safety is
important to us in any case, it is in our DNA. That
is why we really focused on the development of the
pivot post. Every model we have put on the market
since has been tested and CE marked. This still applies,
actually. When EN 12604 was updated last year,
requiring a provision to ensure that the leaf cannot
fall over if the top hinge should fail, we immediately
developed and installed it.” Norport also supplies
the swing gates without a drive, under the name
Manuport.

FOBS Magazine 124|eu 27

Frisian
Norport started 10 years ago with a series of five modern, slim gate
types made of vertical aluminium profiles – and matching fencing. “Since
we come from North Friesland,” Petersen continues, “we also wanted to
carry a Frisian gate in the program from the get-go. That became design line
number 6. We assumed that we would mainly be selling that model here in
the region, but in the meantime, we are also selling it to customers in Austria,
Great Britain, the Netherlands and Switzerland. A year or two ago, we finally
managed to add a design line with horizontal profiles to the program.”

Production
Norport produces the gates – and matching fencing – from
pre-powder-coated aluminium profiles. “Every gate is made to measure,”
says Petersen. “Fencing contractors give us the driveway dimensions and
the fence length. We then adjust the spacing of the bars accordingly and
ensure that it is nicely equal everywhere. We also distribute the number
of posts evenly along the entire fence length. Once the customer – and
their customer – agrees, we start production. We saw and mill the profiles
exactly to size, with CNC machines. The profiles are then screwed together
with blind joints, so the screws aren’t visible. Next, the drive and control are
mounted, connected and tested. Customers receive a gate that is completely
prepared. All they need to do is screw it to the foundation.”

Future
The tenth anniversary has not been celebrated yet due to corona. “We
will make up for that celebration one day,” Petersen concludes. “But we
went out to dinner with the entire team, had a beer together and had fun
brainstorming about the direction we envision for the next 10 years. We are
investing in production, in any case. We will be adding more tools, machines
and stock, so that we can produce more efficiently and, above all, faster. We
will, of course, continue to do this as we continue to grow. We also want to
keep expanding the number of models. And we have a few other great ideas,
but I’ll keep those to myself for now, ha ha ha. Just wait for the surprise,
there is still plenty in the pipeline.” <

Seven deadly
Richard’s Safe Gates

sins with
automated gates

G
ate Safe is regularly involved in reviewing the
safety of automated gates. As a result of this
work, we have become aware of mistakes that
are regularly being replicated in the field – mistakes that
can lead to a gate being deemed unsafe. Here’s a list of
the seven deadliest sins that we come across.

Broken
hinge

Lackofhingeprotectiononswinggates.This
is a major concern and can lead to serious
injury or worse. Always design this risk out or

2
fit mechanical or electronic safety to mitigate
the risk.

Lackofphotocells(lightbeams)ontheinside
as well as the outside of all gates. These
low-cost non-contact safety devices almost
certainly would have saved the lives of the
two children who were tragically killed in

3
two accidents in 2010, which prompted the
founding of Gate Safe in the same year.

Single point failure which can cause

catastrophic failure on either a swing gate
or a sliding gate. The failure of a single
component should never lead to the gate
falling. Over the last 10 years, there have
been numerous instances where falling gates
have resulted in serious injury and death, yet
sadly manufacturers of gates are still failing

4 Lackofendstops,openingandclosing,
on sliding gates. Again, these are simple
devices to fit but we still see sliding gates
without suitable end of travel devices. This
poses a serious risk of the gate running

5
through its support post and falling – again
with potential catastrophic results.

Lackofpedestriansegregation.Another
simple fix whether for a rising arm barrier
or a gate. There should always be guarding
in place to segregate pedestrian traffic
away from the potentially dangerous
machine, the gate. Barriers are especially
susceptible to this risk, if someone
is walking through a barrier, they are

6
oblivious to the fact that the boom is
lowering.

Relying on force limitation

of swing gates as an effective means of
safety. Sadly, this is an issue that remains
a major problem in the industry. Since
Gate Safe’s inception we have consistently
voiced the view that the force on the
leading-edge of the gate has little or no
relevance to the danger of crushing as
you get closer to the hinge end of the
gate. Force limitation should always

7
No end stop be supplemented with other safety to
on slider mitigate these risks.

Falling gate

Last and by no means

least: lack of regular maintenance
on gates and barriers can lead
to a host of problems. These
range from not understanding
new risks stemming from site
changes, to wear and tear not
being detected in time to prevent
an accident.

Please print or photocopy this list

and review it regularly, to make
sure that you never make any of
these mistakes. If you are in any
doubt about understanding the
above risks and dangers, please

PRODUCT NEWS

Berner now also has

Supeero pedestrian gates

B
erner Torantiebe, the manufacturer of gate
drives and Supeero sliding gates from
Rottenburg near Stuttgart in Germany, is
expanding its range with pedestrian gates. The
gates are based on the same aluminium frame
system, with no visible screw connections, that is
also used for their Supeero sliding gates.

“People were increasingly asking us whether we could

also supply a pedestrian gate for this luxurious new
sliding gate,” says Berner’s Marketing Manager
René Hirschka. “From private persons as well as
businesses. So, we are now expanding our range.
Because we use the same frame system as our sliding
gates, we can make our pedestrian gates look exactly
the same as our sliding gates. This creates a very nice
harmonious image, especially when customers choose
a unique and individual design.”

The Supeero Rahmenverbundsystem (RVS), as

the frame system is called officially, consists of
a base profile and a cover profile. Both profiles
are made of anodised aluminium and are fitted
with reinforcing ribs on the inside. They are
available in different sizes, from 40 by 40 to 150 by
150 millimetres. All profiles are interconnectable.
“This doesn’t involve welding,” Hirschka says. “All the
connections are screwed together. This allows us to
make a very stable, yet lightweight gate frame, in
countless variations. The frame can then be filled with
fencing panels, stainless steel bars, perforation plates
or a nice smooth aluminium plate. Fencers can also
create their own infill for this gate. The possibilities
are unlimited.”

36 FOBS Magazine 124|eu

Berner’s frame system serves as a
base and can then be supplemented
with all kinds of infills.

FOBS Magazine 124|eu 37

If a customer opts for an infill of glass plates
or smooth plates, these are glued to the frame
on the outside. “We use a particular technique
for this, which is also used for façade cladding,”
says Hirschka. “First, the plates are secured in
the correct position with double-sided tape. This
tape functions not only as a fastener but also
ensures that the distance between the frame and
the plate is the same and optimal everywhere.
This allows the adhesive to expand properly
and develop its maximum bonding strength. For
pedestrian gates, the plates are screwed onto the
inside, so that the lock case remains accessible for
maintenance if necessary.”

The Supeero gates are delivered complete on a

console and only need to be screwed onto their
foundation upon arrival at the construction
site. Berner can also supply the gates with
a bare frame, on which the installer or his
customer can mount their own infill. “We have
developed a special request and order form, which
makes customers think about all the options and
possibilities before we start producing the gate,”
says Hirschka. “In this way we can make sure that
everything is clear and that the customer gets
exactly the gate that meets all their wishes.” <

If just one
sheep wanders
onto the tracks
Fencing World

I
f someone mistakes a fence for a bush, this can
have major consequences. This is made clear
by a story from the village of Hämelschenburg,
between Hanover and Paderborn, where a drainage
channel needed to be cleared of weeds. Probably the
brushcutter operators cut through the wire mesh while
cutting back the grass. A whole flock of sheep went
through the hole in the fence and found their way
onto the railway track, where a train passing through
wasn't able to brake in time. 21 sheep died, 8 of which
were put down by the police. The track was closed for
1.5 hours.

Aircraft stuck
in mesh fence
W
hen we go looking for unusual news items about
fences, we always end up finding dozens of
reports about cars – usually sports cars – that
lose control on a bend and end up landing in a fence. These
types of accidents are almost never unusual enough to be
mentioned in this section. Usually the driver was drunk, or
something gave them a fright. What is unusual is crashing
your plane into a fence, That puts you in the category of ‘How
on earth did you manage that?’ Well, two men from California
managed it. They wanted to land their single-engine Piper
PA-24, but they got the landing gear stuck in the chain-link
fence surrounding Fullerton Municipal Airport. The Federal
Aviation Administration and the National Transportation
Safety Board will be investigating, but we don't think it's
really necessary. Just fly half a meter higher next time, guys.

48 FOBS Magazine 124|eu

Nit-picking
Canadians
I
n Sundridge, a village just north of Toronto,
Canada, there are new municipal laws that need
to be voted on. These laws will prohibit fences
with barbed wire, razor wire or other dangerous
components being installed at particular places in
the municipality.

At the same time, the municipality wants to use this

to control the building regulations. As a result, no
enclosure is permitted to be built in such a way that
it obstructs the view of traffic or road signs. From
now on, fences around gardens may not be more
than 2 metres in height. If the fence is in front of
the house, it is permitted to be up to 1.2 metres
high if it has openings; otherwise, up to 1 metre.
In industrial zones, fences are permitted to be up
to 2.4 metres high. New fences must be firmly
anchored, and constructed from materials that have
not previously broken or rusted. After installation,
they must be painted or stained to prevent peeling.
Those who fail to comply with the regulations
or don't maintain their fences will be fined
500 Canadian dollars – equivalent to 300 euros per
offence.

So that's how it works in Canada. And we thought

that Germany was bureaucratic.

FOBS Magazine 124|eu 49

Fence
demolition
W
hen wild animals need to be protected,
fencing workers are normally asked to come
and build a fence – for example to stop
deer and wildcats finding their way onto the motorway.
In Wyoming it's the other way round. Volunteers are
working to demolish old fences: fences that used to
mark out pastures, or the boundary between private and
public land. Many of these fences are no longer in use
today, and while they could just be left there, they are
blocking the migration paths of wild animals.

Animal-lovers have mapped more than 7000 kilometres

of old fences in one county of Wyoming alone. That's

Burglars
more than twice as long as the border between the
United States and Mexico. There's so much land in the
American Midwest that the length of all game fences put

steal from
together is estimated at almost one million kilometres.

Our fencing hearts bleed to see so much fencing

the police
dismantled. But not to worry; no doubt there will be a
highway somewhere that will need a fence along it to
protect animals. And in the meantime, the local scrap
dealers can look forward to having plenty of steel wire
coming in.

R
emember the action thriller ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’
from the year 2000, with Nicolas Cage and
Angelina Jolie? We were reminded of it when we
read a newspaper report from Berlin at the start of autumn.

The article said that police there have a yard where they
store cars that have been confiscated. There have been
multiple break-ins here, and things set on fire. The last
time this happened, 20 police officers, a helicopter and
a dog went in search of the intruders, after the security
service came across a hole in the fence.

A hole in the fence was discovered last spring as well. It

was repaired with steel wire, so that from a distance it
looked like the fence was intact. At the start of this year,
unknown persons entered the premises and damaged cars
there. At Christmas 2019 three cars were set on fire, with
unknown perpetrators also managing to steal cars from the
yard. We believe that the Polizeidirektion 3 Abschnitt 32,
at Cecilienstraße 92 in Berlin 12683 will now be happy to
accept quotes for better perimeter security.

Dutch company EuroGate International, the European

of post drivers, post pullers, augers and other tools for the
fencing and agricultural industries, will host open days on 8

“T

EuroGate owner Pieter Jansen, “but if you're going to need to
be able to work with it intensively, then you want to be able to
hold it in your hands before you commit to purchasing. That's why, prior
to coronavirus, we regularly organised demonstrations and other events.
Unfortunately it all had to stop for a while, but now we're able to pick things These photos were taken
up again.” at an earlier open day

52 FOBS Magazine 124|eu

Open days
“We'll be opening our doors to visitors on Friday 8 and Saturday
9 October,” Jansen goes on. “On these days, customers and other
interested parties will be able to take a look at various places in our
business. We've got a large number of demos ready for them to try, both
with new handheld machines, and with attachments for mini diggers,
articulated loaders and agricultural tractors. Anyone who'd like to is free
to roll up their sleeves and try out a selection from the wide range of
augers and post drivers. We'll also have our extensive range of fuel tanks
and water trucks out on display. And finally, we have asked a number of
professionals in the field to come and share their experiences.”

Stands
On the open days, there will be stands from DS Afrasteringen,
Timmerman, Prolock and Postmaster, amongst others. “DS is a
company that installs farm gates, usually with thick wooden posts,
but sometimes steel as well,” Jansen says. “Prolock produces sheet
piling. The people from these two businesses want to show people the
applications you can use a post driver for, and how you can easily drive
different types of posts – wood, steel, aluminium or plastic – into the
ground. Timmerman deals in earthmovers. They will be coming to show
us how you can put them to good use with the various post drivers.
And British company Postmaster will be showing various hydraulic
post driver attachments. All four of these companies are active in
our industry on a daily basis, so they're well-equipped to show how
you should use the machines. They're also able to answer any and all
questions based on practical experience.”

FOBS Magazine 124|eu 53

Rhino
American company Rhino will be sending one of
the first Solar Pros to Dedemsvaart for the open
day. “Until now, Rhino only made hand-held pole
drivers,” Jansen says. “Air-operated, petrol-operated and
hydraulic, but always machines you need to hold yourself.
The Solar Pro changes all that. It's an attachment that
fits onto almost all earthmovers. You can use it to drive
thick, heavy poles of up to 4.5 metres into the ground.
We're very excited about it, our expectations are high.”

Digga
There is also something new from Digga, an Australian
auger manufacturer. “Digga's new auger drives have
a so-called Halo Alignment System,” Jansen explains.
“With a band of red and green LED lights at the top of
the auger, you can see whether the auger drive is aligned
or not. You can drill vertically, without the need for a
spirit level or a colleague to help you. If you drill nice
straight holes, you're able to work more accurately and
you end up needing less concrete. There's also less stress
on the auger drive, meaning that it lasts longer. All in all
we think we've put together a really nice programme,”
Jansen says. “We've a lot to show everyone, to test and
to demonstrate. And there are a few new faces on the
team, so they'll be able to get to know our guests right
away. We're looking forward to two exciting days.” <

Betafence
launches
Izifix post
B
elgian company Betafence has launched
a new fencing post for its 3D panel
range that doesn’t require any additional
mounting materials. The Izifix post, pronounced
‘Easyfix’, is especially valuable to installers who
use the post-panel-post method of installation.

“All installers will appreciate the ease with which

they can simply click the panel into the post
without the need to cut out the 3D curve,” says
Product Manager Kris Van Waes. “As a result,
the panel maintains its rigidity and is firmly
secured to the post. The design allows regular
concrete slabs, like the ones that are often used
in Belgium and France, to be easily slid between
the posts, without the need for an extra concrete
slab holder.”

The Izifix posts are suitable for all of

Betafence’s 3D panels and also for many panel
types made by third parties. They are available
for fence heights from 600 to 2000 millimetres.
They are kept in stock in moss green and
anthracite. But they are, of course, also
available in other colours on request. The post
can be used to create angles between 90 and
180 degrees. Staggered installation is possible
in 100-millimetre steps. Plastic clips, separately
available, ensure that the panel stays tensioned
during installation. Once the concrete is dry
and the fence is therefore tensioned, these
tension tools can be removed. An insert
base plate is also available as an additional
accessory. <
