Project Definition
According to :

o The Project Management Institute (PMI) :A project is a temporary

endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.

o Association of Project Management (APM): A project has a specific

start and end point and is set up to meet specific objectives , to create
a specified result, product or service.

o ISO 9000/2000 : A project is a unique process, consisting of a set of

coordinated and controlled activities with start and finish dates,
undertaken to achieve an objective conforming to specific
requirements, including the constraints of time, cost and resources.
What Is a Project
Project Characteristics :
1. An established objective (Purpose) : Definable in terms of
a specific objective or goal.
2. Process: A defined life span with a beginning and an end.
3. Interdependency : Usually, the involvement of several
departments and professionals.
4. Unique: Typically, doing something that has never been
done before.
5. Temporary : Limitation and specific in terms of time, cost,
and performance requirements (resources).
Project Goal or Constraints
§ Projects need to be performed and delivered under certain
constraints. Traditionally, these constraints have been listed as
“Scope" (performance requirements ), “Time", and “Cost".

These referred to as the "Project Management Triangle"

Project Constraints

“Hit the target” within:

ü Scope
ü Time
ü Cost
,
Role of Project Manger
The role of a project manager is to lead the project team to ensure a
quality project within time, budget, and scope constraints though
various responsibilities, usually include:
• Planning project activities, tasks, and end-results, which includes
creating the work breakdown, schedule, and budget, and
coordinating tasks and allocating resources.
• Selecting and organizing the project team.
• Interfacing with and influencing stakeholders.
• Negotiating with and integrating functional managers, contractors,
users, and top management.
• Providing contact with the customer.
• Monitoring project status.
• Identifying technical and functional problems.
• Solving problems directly or knowing where to find help.
• Dealing with crises and resolving conflicts.
• Recommending termination or redirection of efforts when objectives
cannot be achieved.
Project Management Definition
The BMBOK definition of Project Management (PM) is: “the
application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute
projects effectively and efficiently. It’s a strategic
competency for organizations, enabling them to tie project
results to business goals — and thus, better compete in
their markets”.

Oberlender (1993) definition of Project Management as : “The art

and science of coordinating people, equipment, materials, money
and schedules to complete a specified project on time and within
approved cost”.
