BACKGROUND
Benevolent sexism refers to the appearance of the positive attitude that women receive from
men, such as women should be dainty and pretty, and they need men’s care. This kind of
attitude implies the negative feelings that the women are vulnerable and lack capacity, as
well as the great pressure on women’s appearance and behaviors. However, benevolent
sexism isn't often recognized by women. In fact, even though they are aware of it, some
women are okay and occasionally appreciate benevolent sexism because they think they can
take advantage of it as they might wish to get protection from men, gain benefit from others’
sympathy, and avoid doing heavy-duty or fulfilling responsibility. Benevolent sexism has
created negative consequences which are harmful to gender equality, the health of women,
and even society.

Goal
This project’s goal is to educate the BYU-H students about benevolent sexism and the appropriate
relationship between men and women, in which the students could be more aware of it, reduce
benevolent sexism, and have a healthier studying and working environment.

POSTERS
Poster a) - A small part of women VS big picture
The idea is that when people look closer to the poster, they will see the most common female
character (or the first thing that comes into people’s minds) which are mom, wife, or daughter,
etc. When you step further from the poster, you will see a picture that helps you jump outside of
those stereotypes - women can do the same as men can, they are not just moms, wives, or
daughters.

We want to use this poster to make people aware that women's identities are not just fixed and
consider that they are more excellent than you can think of.

Poster b) - “Allow me darling” What is the real intention?


The dichotomy in power between men and women, and how men control it. The poster would
inspire people to think about the demoralizing effects of wrong intentions. The poster would
have a simplified cartoon man opening a door for a woman, inside the man’s head you would
see the words “control, power, glorification.”

Poster c) - TEXT poster, Big & small keywords in two colors


The poster is split into two parts. The left side is red for “the stereotype for women”, such as
weak, sensitive, makeup, thin, clean, graceful, and a home keeper. The right side is blue for
“What should it be like?”, such as kind, trusted friend, family member, independent, smart

Video 1 - Bevenolent Sexism in life
Description:
This video exaggerates the way a man helps even the smallest things for a woman. The man
even tries to hold the paper for the woman. In this video, the man tried to help, but the woman
didn't want it. However, the man forced the woman to accept his help.

Storyboard:
Opening scene will have a person introducing benevolent sexism:
Second, we will see a Korean girl buying a water bottle from the vending machines in the
HGB. There will be a Korean guy at the water fountain who sees her take the water bottle
out of the vending machine. He will come running over and demand to open her water
bottle. She will politely say no I have got it, but he will insist to the point that he takes it from
her, and opens it. He will then walk away saying, “Thank goodness I was there to save that
girl from all that hard work.”
Third Scene, the girl will be walking towards the aloha center, and you’ll see the guy in the
background watching her. He sees that no one is around her to open the door so he bolts
over there to open the door for her. He yells at her to not open the door and she’s confused
so she doesn’t. He then gets there and opens the door. After that, he walks away saying,
“Man thank goodness I did that, I couldn’t imagine her exerting the effort to open the door
by herself.”
Fourth scene; She is in the library picking up her bag which looks full. He is upstairs on the
side, and looks over and sees her. He calls out wait!! Don’t!! He then runs down the stairs
and runs after her just so he can pick up the bag for her. She is fed up at this point and just
walks out as he trips over himself. The ending scene would be him saying, “Man, she was
so rude to not let me help her.”

Video 2 - Women and men switch roles
Description:
When the audience watches the video, they may think it is weird for a woman to do those
things, we want to help the audience to think about WHY can’t the woman do those things?
(Because men will normally do those things to women)

Storyboard:
First scene: People explain benevolent sexism, and talk about the weirdness of women
doing something.
Second scene: That same guy is opening a water bottle, and we have a different girl
running after him saying wait!!! She forces the bottle out of his hand and opens it.
Third scene, he is going into a building and goes to open a door, but a girl gets to it first,
and says “after you.” He denies saying after you, but she won’t budge. Eventually, he is
pushed in by people.
Fourth scene: That guy is about to pick up something heavy. In-room 235, he first looks
around to make sure that the coast is clear. He then looks down to pick it up, but then a girl
picks it up first for him. He gets aggravated that she won’t let him carry it and stomps out of
the room

Description:

Description:

Canvas painting
Description:
Have a painting of a woman for people to paint on large strokes. After a ton of people paint
on it, the white canvas eventually becomes black, which shows how subtle benevolent
sexism is. Although nothing seems wrong with it, over time it degrades and distorts pure.
Invite them to come to the workshop
Needs:
At least 5 workers. 4 cans of paint/2 boxes of chalk.

Goals: Increase their knowledge of Benevolent Sexism? Why is it a problem? How can we be

Many people don’t know and understand benevolent sexism correctly. It is good to inform people about the
basic concept of benevolent sexism.

What is “Benevolent Sexism”?


Benevolent sexism gives women the belief that feminine characteristics, nurturing, and
traditional gender roles, are necessary to complement each other (Daniels & Leaper, 2011).
Benevolent sexism includes the idea that women should be protected by men (Daniels &
Leaper, 2011). Benevolent sexism contributes to gender inequality by limiting the role of
women (Grubb & Turner, 2012). Benevolent sexists feel the need to protect women and see
women as pure beings (Grubb & Turner, 2012).

Benevolent sexism is gender discrimination, but despite the negative connotation, many
women are okay or even appreciate this practice. According to "Flattering to Deceive: Why
People Misunderstand Benevolent Sexism" many women experience benevolent sexism more
than hostile sexism, but they do not protest… Why? The reason is that women see it as warm.
"Benevolent Sexism and Mate Preferences: Why Do Women Prefer Benevolent Men Despite
Recognizing That They Can Be Undermining?" describes why women prefer benevolent
sexism: according to the authors who wrote this article, the attitude and behavior of benevolent
sexist men were attractive to women because they were interpreted as signals of willingness to
invest.

What is the influence? (Positive VS Negative)


Benevolent sexism refers to the appearance of the positive attitude that women receive from
men (such as women are dainty and need men’s care). This kind of attitude implies the
negative feelings that the women are vulnerable, lack ability, or need protection. However,
benevolent sexism isn't often recognized by women; in fact, women are okay and occasionally
appreciate benevolent sexism more than the lack of it, and it has created negative
consequences on women and on society. Because of benevolent sexism, having children
becomes a task/responsibility to women under society pressure/expectation instead of their
own will.

What is the right relationship between men and women in general society?
Men and women should be treated equally and fairly. People should not be judged to be of
greater or lesser capability due to race, sex, or color. More often than not women are usually
treated with greater care and more caution in the workplace in order to protect themselves
from harm. They are also given easier tasks to not overwork them. These are acts of benevolent
sexism, women and men should be treated and praised on equal levels, and the work should
be divided up evenly amongst them. In societal terms concerning opening doors, lifting heavy
objects, or other small acts performed by men for women. They should be done only as acts of
kindness, and not be done with the intentions of “saving” women. Women can handle
themselves, they don’t need “saving” They need cooperation. The next time you feel a desire to
complement a female on her penmanship, and the man on his expertise, I would consider what
you’re saying… Because the right relationship is the one where women are placed on the same
level as men.
