1. Design a system to separate Vapor and Liquid with the following

specification.
Specification Components
Temperature 25°C, Methane (0.5)
Pressure 1 bar, Ethane (0.3)
Molar Flow 100 kgmole/h Propane (0.1)
i-Butane (0.05)
Fluid package: PR n-Butane (0.05)
Water

2. Stream containing ethylene and ethane must be separated

– 68.5 wt% ethylene
– 31.5 wt% ethane
– 7,300,000 lb/day flowrate
– Column has 125 stages
– Product stream with minimum of 99.96 wt% with total
flowrate of 5,000,000 lb/day
 Determine if the separation is feasible (use the Distillation Column model in
Aspen HYSYS to achieve the problem specifications).
Assumptions:
- 100% tray efficiency
- Total condenser
- 300 psig column operating pressure
- A refrigerant utility stream capable of condensing the ethylene mixture (not
included in model)
- Feed mixture is at 350 psig and is a vapor
- 125 stages
- Feed enters the column at stage 90
- Peng-Robinson equation of state
