EFICO ASPEN HYSYS

TRAINING 2.0
CAP STONE PROJECT
PROJECT TIME SCHEDULE

The capstone project would span for two weeks.

In the first week, you would be working on the first phase of the project while completing the last phase of the
project in the second week.

Date Given : 22nd june,2020

Proposed date of submission: 3rd july,2020

Note : Project would be presented on LinkedIn

PROJECT SCENARIO

You work with EFICO RESOURCES a leading oil and gas firm as a process engineer.
Recently your firm receives demand to supply

 Methane to CALYSTA; a company that is chiefly involved in the development of

industrial processes that utilize microorganisms to convert methane into high protein feed
for livestock.

 Ethane to DOW CHEMICALS; a company that produces plastics

 Propane for commercial consumption as fuel

PROJECT SCENARIO (contd)

On getting these demands, your company puts together an exploration and

production team to go explore Natural gas.

Recently news came back from the exploration team that some wells viable enough
to supply natural gas commercially has be discovered and they are been prepared for
production.

It is the duty of your team to transport this natural gas from their respective wells
down to your plant (1st project phase) and the design a plant for the separation of this
Natural Gas into the required demanded products (2 nd project phase)
JOB DESCRIPTION

Your role in your team as a process engineer is to simulate these

processes (1st and 2nd phases) from the natural gas wells to the
production of the important demanded products in your plant.

The data for simulation has been supplied by your team

2ND PHASE DATA
DE-METHANIZER SPECIFICATION

 Feed Material Stream enters the column from the top stage inlet
 Number of stages = 10
 Top Stage pressure = 330 psia
 Reboiler pressure = 335 psia
 Top Stage temperature = -125 °F
 Reboiler temperature = 80 °F
 Overhead Prod Rate = 1500 lbmole/hr
DE-ETHANIZER SPECIFICATION
DE-ETHANIZER CONFIGURATION

ADDITIONAL OPERATING SPECIFICATION

Spec Type: Column component ratio
Spec parameters:
 Name: C2/C3 Active specification for calculation in de-ethanizer should be
 Reflux ratio
 Stage : reboiler  Distillate rate
 Flow basis: mole fraction  C2/C3
 Phase: liquid
 Spec value: 0.01
 Numerator: ethane
 Denominator: propane
SHORT CUT DISTILLATION UNIT

 A short cut distillation unit is used to separate the overhead stream from the de-ethanizer into
ethane and methane

 Operating condition
 Light key in bottom = methane (0.0010)
 Heavy key in distillate = ethane (0.0010)
 Condenser pressure = 1 atm
 Reboiler pressure = 1 atm
 External reflux ration = 0.5
DE-PROPANIZER SPECIFICATION
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 Schedule 40 steel pipes is used throughout and all branches are buried at a depth of 1 m (3 ft). All pipes
are uninsulated. Also consider inner and outer HTC and the pipe wall in heat transfer
estimation. (Ambient Temperature=41°F)
 The De-Methanizer is a reboiled absorber
 A 2 phase separator separates the bottom stream from de-methanizer into liquid and vapour parts before
sending into pump (pump operates only with liquids)
 Most of methane is removed from the top of the de-methanizer tower and the bottom stream is pumped to
404psia to enters to the De-ethanizer which is a distillation Column
 The top product from de-ethanizer is sent to a short cut distillation unit
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION(contd)

 The bottom product from the de-ethanizer is sent to a valve where the pressure is
decreased to 245.1psia . The outlet flow from the valve is sent to a de-propanizer
(distillation Column) where most of propane is removed from the top and the heavier
hydrocarbons is removed from the bottom

 Fluid package to be used is PENG-ROBINSON
