THE ANTI-BIAS

APPROACH IN
EDUCATION
Gisselle Delgado

1
Why use the anti-bias approach to
teaching?
The Anti-bias approach is a way for early educators
to support all young children learning about race and
fairness. It aims to teach all children to be proud of
their identities, respect each other differences, and
recognize unfairness and bias that occur in the
education system.

The framework for

Anti-bias
It is an ongoing process of observation,
critical reflection, and action. It Is essential to
position ourselves as learners to support
students with or without disabilities in anti-
bias teaching and provide resources for
families to learn about anti-bias education

3 The 5 aspects of Anti bias

teaching
When using the anti-bias approach it is important to
consider the following:
1. Entry points: What are the children thinking about
race?
2. Feelings: How does race make you feel? Why?
3. Thinking: What information do I need to think through
next steps for supporting all children learn about race
4. Responding and sharing: How will you Scaffold or
provide opportunities to help children be aware of
racism.

"Young children will not have

strategies for interrupting
racism if we do not teach them
to recognize it"

Why is this necessary in ECE classrooms?

Children who enter schools where racism
exists interpret that racial unfairness is
normal.
They may internalize misconceptions
or learn racial hierarchies if we are not
teaching things appropriately

INEQUITABLE SYSTEMS!
