He did it first!
Martin Strel is a long-distance swimmer from Slovenia. He has been
passionate about the issue of clean water for many years, and he has tried to
do something about it by swimming. He has swum some of the longest rivers
in the world to draw people´s attention to water problems around the globe.
In 2002, he swam the Mississippi (2,359 miles or 3,797 km); in 2003, the
Paraná (1,199 miles or 1,930 km); in 2004, the Yangtze (2,487 miles or 4,003
Km) and in 2011, the Colorado (1,450 miles or 2,334 km).
But perhaps his most famous achievement was in 2007, when he swam the
Amazon in order to raise awareness of water pollution. He swam from
Atalaya in Perú all the way to Belém in Brazil, a distance of 3,374 miles (or
5,430 km)! It was a very dangerous swim in so many ways , and in order not
to get sunburned, he often wore a mask over his face. Strel was the first
person in the world ever to swim the Amazon, and in 2009, his swim became
the subject of a documentary film
