How can healthcare community organizations do more to help prevent injuries or illness or other
disease conditions and concerns in the community?

 Advocate for a policy on violence and injury prevention

- Injuries are a threat to health in every country of the world. Each year, more than 5 million
people die as a result of some form of injury and among 15–44 year-olds, injuries are one of
the leading causes of death and morbidity (1). If current trends continue, the global injury
burden will rise dramatically by the year 2020, with road traffic injuries, interpersonal
violence, war and self-inflicted injuries making the largest contribution to the predicted
increase in the number of injury deaths worldwide. The intention of such a document is to
raise awareness and create mutual understanding about a situation (based on an analysis of
the problems, trends, causes and potential solutions);to articulate ethical and other
principles that should justify and guide action; to generate a consensus vision on the actions
to be undertaken; to provide a framework for action; to define institutional responsibilities
and mechanisms of coordination; and to engage a variety of partners.

 Maintaining essential health services and strengthening the COVID-19 response

- The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging health systems across the world. Rapidly increasing
demand for care of people with COVID-19 is compounded by fear, misinformation and
limitations on the movement of people and supplies that disrupt the delivery of frontline
health care for all people. When health systems are overwhelmed and people fail to access
needed services, both direct mortality and indirect mortality from preventable and treatable
conditions increase. Existing delivery approaches will need to be adapted as the risk−benefit
analysis for any given activity changes in the context of a pandemic.

 Preventing Tobacco Use and Secondhand Smoke Exposure

- Preventing tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure can help reduce chronic disease

prevalence. A total of 21 CPPW communities addressed tobacco prevention and control by

implementing strategies in various settings.

Strategies included:
• Restricting the sale of tobacco products to young people.
• Expanding smoke-free protections in various settings, including workplaces, restaurants,

bars, campuses, parks, and beaches.

• Reducing secondhand smoke exposure in multiunit housing complexes.
• Expanding Quitline and other cessation services.
 Improving Access to Healthy Foods and Beverages
- To prevent obesity and reduce its prevalence, 37 CPPW communities increased access to
healthy food and beverage choices using a variety of interventions.

Strategies included:
• Increasinghealthy food and beverage availability in vending machines.
• Improving the availability, quality, and affordability of healthy foods in corner stores.
• Improving the nutritional content of food in a variety of settings through policies,
guidelines, or standards.

 Establish vaccination against COVID-19 programs/ campaigns

- Immunizations are an essential health service that protects individuals from VPDs. By
providing immunizations, individuals and communities remain protected and the likelihood
of an outbreak of a VPD decreases. Preventing a VPD outbreak saves lives, requires fewer
resources than an outbreak response, and reduces the burden on a health system strained
by the COVID-19 pandemic. While sustaining immunization systems, countries should
respect the principle of do no harm and work to limit transmission of COVID-19 while
providing immunization services.
