Fuel system (with hand pump)

When carrying out fault tracing, it is important to understand the function of the system and to follow the fault tracing
sequence in the check list to avoid non-defective components being replaced.

Schematic description

of the feed side fuel flow during continuous operation

Fuel is sucked by the feed pump (1) through the strainer (2) on the tank unit and into the fuel filter housing (3). If the
engine is fitted with a primary filter (4) and water separator (5), the fuel is sucked through these as well. The fuel then
passes through the control unit cooling coil (6), up to the overflow valve (7), where the fuel from the tank is mixed with
the return fuel from the cylinder head fuel channel (8), and then further to the suction side of the feed pump.

The feed pump (1) presses the fuel to the fuel filter housing (3) through the main filter (9) to the cylinder head's
longitudinal fuel channel (8). This channel supplies each unit injector (10) with fuel via a ring-shaped channel around
each injector in the cylinder head. The overflow valve (7) controls the pressure of the fuel feed to the injectors.

The feed pump’s valves

There are two valves in the feed pump (1):

The safety valve (11) allows the fuel to flow back to the suction side when the pressure becomes too high, for example
if the fuel filter is blocked.
The non-return valve (12) opens when the hand pump (13) is used.

Automatic bleeding

If air gets into the system, it is automatically bled when the engine starts. When bleeding, the air is pressed into the fuel
tank via the return line (15). Bleeding of the filter after filter replacement is controlled by valves (19), (14) and (25).

Draining water

Draining water from the water separator (5) requires the following requirements to be fulfilled:

The sensor (16) in the water separator indicates high water level
The vehicle is stationary
The engine is stopped
Ignition key in drive position
The parking brake is applied

Using lever 17, go to the Vehicle settings menu and then Draining/Bleeding. Select the function using the lever buttons
and the fuel should be drained. Wait until the symbol disappears from the display, as it is only then that the draining is
complete.

Manual hand pump

The manual hand pump (13) is located on the fuel filter housing and is used to pump up fuel (when the engine is
stationary) after the fuel system has been emptied. The non-return valve (24) for the hand pump is also located in the
fuel filter housing.

Note: The hand pump must not be used while the engine is running.

The new fuel filter housing eliminates the need to drain the fuel when replacing the filter. The valve peg (19) and (23)
close when the fuel filter is unscrewed. It is no longer necessary to bleed the system after replacing the filter, since this
is performed automatically when the engine is started and run for more than 2 minutes.

The plugged outlet (20) is fitted on the fuel filter housing. The outlet is used when measuring feed pressure with an
external sensor.

There is also a pressure sensor (21) on the fuel filter housing, which monitors the feed pressure after the fuel filter. A
fault code is shown on the instrument panel if the feed pressure is less than the value given in the fault code book.

A fuel heater (22) is available as an optional extra. It is fitted in the lower part of the water separator.
